Like it is : Brewer will have plenty of reasons to celebrate Published: Thursday, June 29, 2006 PRINT E-MAIL A day after Ronnie Brewer returns from the NBA Draft in New York, he’s hosting a party for 3, 000 of his closest friends and admirers. OK, Brewer isn’t throwing the bash Friday night, but it is the Ronnie Brewer Draft Party that two of his buddies, Patrick McAnnally and Dustin Bryant, in cooperation with PNosh, are sponsoring. The party is open to the public, but really is limited to 3, 000, and costs $ 20 for general admission and $ 50 for VIP. It starts at 7: 30 in the Fayetteville Town Center and goes until around 2 a. m.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Eddie Armstrong Scholarship Foundation and the M&N Augustine Foundation. Tickets are available at the door or online at www. pnoshonline. com. There will be music and beverages for the entire party, and from 7: 30 until 10 there will be wine and cheese. Of course, Brewer will be there along with a big crowd of his closest friends and admirers. For years the debate has been which college conference is the strongest in the country. Fans of the SEC are as adamant about their league as Big Ten fans are about theirs. Now the argument is spilling over to college basketball, and it appears the SEC has a lot of facts to back up its claim to fame. Florida and LSU made the Final Four this year, and the Gators went on to win the whole thing. Both teams return key players for next season. Yet, there is something else to consider. The Miami Heat just won the NBA championship in dramatic style, and four of their five starters played some or all of their college ball in the SEC. Jason Williams started at Florida, Antoine Walker played at Kentucky, Udonis Haslem at Florida and Shaquille O’Neal at LSU. Dwyane Wade was the only starter not from the SEC, and the fifth player taken in the 2003 NBA Draft paid his dues at Marquette. Oh, and two reserves on the Miami team were also out of the SEC. Derek Anderson played at Kentucky and Shandon Anderson at Georgia. Maybe it isn’t really open to debate about which is the best basketball league this year. Harold Jameson, unofficial historian for the Southern Arkansas Muleriders, sent a printout of a blog he found after the announcement that Texas and Arkansas would play again. The six pages had varied opinions, and few were favorable toward the Razorbacks. More than one poster thought the Razorbacks played dirty and tried to hurt Vince Young during the game in Fayetteville. Others thought it was not a wise idea to play the Hogs because it could only help their recruiting in the state of Texas (actually, Mack Brown seems to get any and all players from the Lone Star State that he wants ). Yet another was worried because in the past two meetings Texas had “much, much” better squads and lost once and struggled to win the other. One guy wrote that the news of the series came because Houston Nutt slipped up and confirmed it. Truth is, the Austin American-Statesman broke the story a day before this paper had it, which is unusual, but that is the way it became public knowledge. Of course, there was the almost obligatory talk about Arkansas joining the Big 12. That will happen the day after Arkansas schedules Arkansas State. While it was not the favorite post — that will be next — one guy made complete and total sense when he wrote that it will be a license to print money for both schools. The absolute laugh-out-loud message was that this new twoyear series was the fault of Jerry Jones, because in 2010 he wants the game moved to his new stadium in Arlington. Wow, these really are the dog days of summer.
