Inside The Matchups

Published: Sunday, December 03, 2006 PRINT E-MAIL

QUARTERBACKS Both quarterbacks made mistakes, and no one will be showing film of Saturday’s game for a quarterback clinic. But Arkansas’Casey Dick didn’t cost his team a victory. Dick rebounded from the worst game of his career to play a respectable game, throwing for 148 yards and a touchdown. Chris Leak became Florida’s all-time leading passer and finished with 189 yards passing, but he also threw two interceptions that led directly to Arkansas touchdowns and kept the Razorbacks in the game until the end. ADVANTAGE Arkansas RUNNING BACKS If wide receivers could count in this category, Florida wins. The Gators outrushed the Razorbacks, but Florida didn’t have the best

backs. The Gators’ leading rusher was a receiver (Percy Harvin, 106 yards ) running and scoring on end-arounds. Darren McFadden wasn’t 100 percent (sore ankle ), and Florida’s run defense is about as good as it comes, but McFadden was still the best running back on the field. He finished with 73 yards rushing. Felix Jones added 57 yards and caught two touchdown passes coming out of his spot in the backfield for the Razorbacks. ADVANTAGE Arkansas RECEIVERS Florida dropped way too many balls, but Arkansas didn’t catch nearly enough. Once again Marcus Monk was the Razorbacks ’ only viable threat among their receiving corps. Four Gators receivers caught at least two passes (two for Arkansas ), and despite three drops by wide-open receivers, the Florida receivers made more of an impact in this game. ADVANTAGE Florida OFFENSIVE LINE Arkansas was held more than 100 yards below its season rushing average, but the line kept Florida out of the backfield and gave up no sacks. Arkansas put a lot of pressure on Chris Leak, who saw his protection break down several times. Leak was sacked twice. Two long runs were about the entire Gators rushing game. ADVANTAGE Arkansas DEFENSIVE LINE Arkansas’ fast defensive line burst though Florida’s front often and had several tackles behind the line of scrimmage, with Ernest Mitchell leading the way. The defensive line’s biggest play, however, happened when they were trying to avoid being tackled. Antwain Robinson’s third-quarter interception return for a touchdown got the Razorbacks back in the game and electrified the crowd. ADVANTAGE Arkansas LINEBACKERS Florida weakside linebacker Earl Everett, the Gators ’ leading tackler, was questionable before the game but started and played well. Middle linebacker Brandon Siler was all over the field and had a team-high 12 tackles. Florida’s linebackers are big, fast and came up to play the run well. Weston Dacus made a key interception for Arkansas, which led to a touchdown. ADVANTAGE Florida DEFENSIVE BACKS Arkansas’ secondary was burned repeatedly. Darius Vinnett lost Percy Harvin at the line of scrimmage on Harvin’s 37-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and only several drops by Florida’s receivers kept things from being much worse. The Gators covered well much of the game, with Ryan Smith batting down a potential touchdown pass to Marcus Monk. ADVANTAGE Florida SPECIAL TEAMS Special teams played a big role, with everything going the Gators ’ way. Florida place-kicker Chris Hetland, who was 3 for 12 on the season, opened the scoring with a 33-yard field goal, while Arkansas ’ Jeremy Davis missed from 40 yards in the first half. Arkansas’ punt team, normally very reliable, had three costly breakdowns. Jacob Skinner had a punt blocked for the first time this season, and Florida scored on the next play to take a 10-0 lead. The Gators’ successful fake punt from their 15 late in the third quarter was about as gutsy a call as a coach can make, and Reggie Fish’s muff into the end zone for a Gators touchdown later on that possession was about as bad a play as one can make. ADVANTAGE Florida
