SEC Championship Game Television Report

Published: Sunday, December 03, 2006 PRINT E-MAIL

When CBS Sports introduced its Play of the Game late in Florida’s 38-28 victory over Arkansas in the SEC Championship Game, it cut to the 3: 48 mark of the third quarter.

Florida was lined up for a punt from its 41.

Arkansas led 21-17, and playby-play man Verne Lundquist and analyst Gary Danielson agreed that they couldn’t believe Florida had just squandered its final timeout of the second half.

After the play, neither Lundquist nor Danielson mentioned anything else about Florida’s clock management, not after Arkansas’ Reggie Fish tried to field the punt in traffic at the Arkansas 5 and muffed it into the end zone where Florida recovered to take a 24-17 lead.

“Oh, he fumbled it,” Lundquist screamed. “He fumbled it. Touchdown Florida. That’s what they had in mind when they called timeout.”

“Unbelievable mistake,” Danielson said. “That’s as big a mental mistake as I’ve seen in a football game in a long time. Reggie Fish should’ve never backed up. Put your heels on the 10, you get the ball on the 20.”

“It’s a basic premise of special teams,” Lundquist said. “Unbelievable.”

CBS replayed Fish’s and Arkansas’ disaster.

“Not only does he field the ball at the 5, he fields it over his shoulder with no blocking,” Danielson said. “Five Florida players back there. That is a bonehead play. Even if he catches it, Verne, it’s a bonehead play.”

“Yep,” Lundquist said.

“Sometimes, strategy doesn’t mean anything.”

“That is almost unimaginable.”

Florida led the rest of the game. That’s sports

CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson interviewed Florida Coach Urban Meyer before the start of the second half.

Wolfson asked Meyer if he was aware that UCLA had beaten Southern California, thus leaving the debate for Ohio State’s opponent in the national championship game between Michigan and Florida, should Florida defeat Arkansas.

“No, we have our hands full here with a very talented Arkansas team,” Meyer said.

“There was no mention of that in the locker room ?” Wolfson said.

“There was no mention of that. We have a lot of work to do.”

Then Wolfson asked a curious question.

“Now that you know, will you coach any differently in the second half ?”

“No,” Meyer said. “We want to win the SEC championship. That’s been our goal from Day 1, and we’re going to go as hard as we can in the second half.”

CBS play-by-play announcer Verne Lundquist responded with evidence suggesting college football sometimes parallels politics — areas where dishonesty can be considered acceptable behavior. Some, like Lundquist, think it might qualify as admirable.

“I admire what he said,” Lundquist said. “But I don’t believe a word of it about not knowing.” Praise for McFadden

CBS analyst Gary Danielson didn’t say he thought Arkansas back Darren McFadden should be the Heisman Trophy winner, but what he did say would not disqualify McFadden from consideration.

Danielson spoke early about McFadden.

“He’s the best running back, maybe the best football player in college football,” Danielson said. “He’ll line up everywhere. He’s a wonderful blend of speed and power.” Extra points From CBS analyst Gary Danielson, after Florida’s gameopening kickoff sailed through the end zone: “Think he’s not juiced ?” Play-by-play announcer Verne Lundquist’s response: “He is, as are some of the fans.”

Lundquist, as Arkansas punter Jacob Skinner went through his prepunt ritual: “We’ve grown used to this. Well, no, I’m not used to this.”

Danielson on Arkansas defensive coordinator Reggie Herring: “I like his quote, ‘I ain’t into this bend-but-don’tbreak stuff. I want to stop them.’”

Danielson with more on Herring: “Reggie Herring’s going crazy. He doesn’t have any hair, but he’d be pulling it out if he had any.”
