Southern bloc elevates McFadden Published: Sunday, December 10, 2006 PRINT E-MAIL NEW YORK - Arkansas sophomore tailback Darren McFadden finished second in the Heisman Trophy balloting announced on Saturday night with a strong showing in his native South. The Heisman Trophy balloting released after the announcement of Ohio State senior quarterback Troy Smith had won didn't show a regional breakdown of first-place votes, but did so by points. Points are awarded on the basis of three for a first-place vote, two for second and one for third. McFadden had 45 first-place votes and of his 878 points, 436 came from the South and Southwest regions. He also finished second in the Mid-Atlantic region. Smith won every region and his 801 first-place votes of 886 cast translated to 86. 5 percent, the highest for any winner in Heisman Trophy history.
His margin of victory over McFadden, 1, 662 points, was the second-biggest in Heisman Trophy history. Southern California's O. J. Simpson had the biggest in 1968, when he beat Purdue's Leroy Keyes by 1, 750 points, but that's when 276 more ballots were mailed out than are now. Smith was considered an overwhelming favorite, but he said Friday he still believed any of the three finalists - himself, McFadden and Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn - could win. After Smith was announced as the winner, he showed plenty of emotion. "Normally, I'm pretty cool in pressure situations, but my heart is pounding really fast now," Smith said. "I'm at a loss for words. I just can't believe this is happening." Smith is 25-2 as Ohio State's starting quarterback, including 12-0 this season to lead the Buckeyes to a No. 1 national ranking and BCS title game matchup with Florida. Smith, who has passed for 2, 507 yards and 30 touchdowns, this season became the sixth Ohio State player to win the Heisman Trophy, but first quarterback from a Big Ten school. Overall, Ohio State has won the Heisman Trophy seven times, with running back Archie Griffin being the award's only two-time winner, in 1974 and 1975. Yesterday's Most Popular 1.
