Arkansas grants McCurdy release; report indicates Beverley pondering Published: Wednesday, March 28, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — The future of Arkansas guard Patrick Beverley, the SEC Freshman of the Year, remained unclear Tuesday while guard Sean McCurdy pushed ahead with a request to transfer. Beverley and his mother, Lisa, planned to return to Fayetteville on Tuesday from his home in Chicago and meet with Athletic Director Frank Broyles, the Chicago Tribune reported. Beverley was frustrated that Arkansas fired Coach Stan Heath on Monday, Lisa Beverley said. “Patrick told me he doesn’t know what he wants to do,” Lisa Beverley told the Tribune. “We realize if he is able to transfer that he’d have to sit out a year.”
Beverley probably would not consider transferring to Illinois, which did not offer him a scholarship during recruiting, Lisa Beverley said. St. John’s, Virginia, Michigan and UCLA were other schools he liked, she said. Beverley led Arkansas in scoring (13. 9 points per game ), steals (61 ), three-pointers made (73 ) and free-throw percentage (. 812 ) and was second in assists (110 ). He started 34 games and scored 29 points in his debut. Arkansas has given McCurdy the OK to talk to other schools about transferring, UA compliance director Marvin Caston said. Heath granted a scholarship release to McCurdy last week after talking to McCurdy’s father Bob, Caston said. The basketball staff informed Caston of McCurdy’s request Tuesday. Arkansas will honor McCurdy’s request because it was a pre-existing arrangement, Caston said. No other transfer requests will be granted to speak to other schools until a new coach is hired. Forward Cyrus McGowan has said he was looking into transferring but would wait to find out about the new coach. Arkansas faxed “permission to speak” letters for McCurdy to Colgate, Richmond, William & Mary and Wofford, Caston said. McCurdy has played two seasons and totaled 54 points as a freshman and 54 points as a sophomore. He started six games last season and averaged 9. 3 minutes as a backup to point guard Gary Ervin. McGowan, who arrived in the same recruiting class as McCurdy, played in 17 games last season and averaged 2. 8 minutes. More Stories From: SCOTT CAIN Yesterday's Most Popular 1.
