SEC BASEBALL : UA earns title with 3 in 10th

Published: Saturday, May 19, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas ’ recent frustrations were wiped away Friday on one big swing from Wayne Hrozek.

Hrozek lined a two-run double with one out in the 10 th inning to give Arkansas a 4-3 victory over Ole Miss before 9, 812 fans at Baum Stadium, clinching the SEC Western Division for the Razorbacks.

Arkansas scored three in the 10 th after Ole Miss had taken the lead with two runs in the top of the inning. The No. 10 Razorbacks (38-17, 18-12 SEC ) had lost five of their past seven coming into the game.

Arkansas last won the SEC West crown in 2004, when the Razorbacks advanced to the College World Series.

“This is a sweet, sweet win and I’m just real proud of a lot of guys,” Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn said. “This is a tough league, and the West was very good this year. We’re all the same. We all can beat each other, and I feel very fortunate to be where we are right now.”

Arkansas used four walks and some daring base-running by Matt Willard in the 10 th inning to set up Hrozek for his gamewinning hit. Willard scored from third on a short fly ball into foul territory in left field, where Justin Henry made the catch. Henry’s throw beat Willard to the plate, but the ball bounced high off the chest of catcher Brett Basham as Willard scored.

Logan Forsythe and Casey Coon then walked before Hrozek, who hit a three-run home run Thursday, hit a two-run double to give Arkansas the SEC West championship.

“This is why I came back,” said Danny Hamblin, who returned for his senior year after being drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the ninth round last summer. “It’s a great feeling, and it took all the guys to get it done.

“ You never know who’s going to get the big hit, and it was Wayne Hrozek, whose one swing changed the game for us.”

The comeback prevented Arkansas from wasting another standout pitching performance by Jess Todd, who struck out a career-high 12 and held Ole Miss to four hits in nine innings. Dallas Keuchel (6-2 ) picked up the final out in the 10 th inning to get credit for the victory.

“Jess was unbelievable, and it was just another one of his great games,” Van Horn said of Todd, who has struck out at least 10 in four of his past six games. “He’s just an incredible, incredible competitor and I told him thanks for giving us a chance to win again.”

Ole Miss (34-21, 15-14 ) broke the tie with two runs in the 10 th inning against reliever Chris Rhoads. Zach Miller reached on an error by shortstop Tim Smalling before Fuller Smith lined an RBI triple into the right-field corner to put the Rebels ahead. Ole Miss added a run when pinchrunner JoJo Trann scored on a bunt by Brett Basham.

Arkansas fans were on their feet in the seventh, anticipating the Razorbacks would take the lead after loading the bases with one out. But they returned to their seats in frustration after Brian Walker grounded into a double play.

Arkansas also put the lead run on second base with one out in the eighth, but Forsythe and Hrozek struck out to end the inning.

Arkansas took a 1-0 lead in the first inning despite losing two runners on the bases. Jake Dugger was thrown out at home while trying to score on an infield grounder, and Forsythe was caught trying for third after an RBI single by Coon.

Walker ended the third inning when he was thrown out while trying to score from third on a wild pitch. Ole Miss pitcher Lance Lynn took the throw from catcher Alex Kliman, who hustled after the ball and made a good throw to Lynn at the plate.

Kliman tied the game 1-1 with a two-out, infield single in the fifth. Miller doubled and later scored when Kliman slid into first to beat a throw from Forsythe, who couldn’t cleanly field the hard grounder at third.
