Hogs’ Hrozek delivers in clutch

Published: Saturday, May 19, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL

FAYETTEVILLE — Wayne Hrozek provides exactly what Arkansas needs to turn around its late-season swoon and gain momentum entering the postseason — intangibles.

The sophomore outfielder came off the bench and delivered the Razorbacks’ first gameending hit of the season with a one-out, bases-loaded double to the right-field wall to score Jake Dugger and Logan Forsythe and give Arkansas a 4-3 victory over Ole Miss.

The Razorbacks had to wait until their 55 th game of the season — and second-to-last of the regular season — to record their first game-ending hit, but it was worth the wait for Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn.

“I gave him the green light the f irst pitch,” Van Horn said of Hrozek, whose hard line drive sailed past right fielder Jordan Henry on a 2-1 delivery from righthander Cody Satterwhite. “He just drove it over the right fielder’s head. He’s 5-7 or 5-8, but he’s strong as an ox.

“ I’m proud of our team for hanging in there. I told them to stay strong and something good can happen.”

The Razorbacks celebrated on the field after the hit, and moments later Hrozek received a thick dousing of shaving cream in the face by former Razorback Justin White as a reward.

“It was just a fastball away, and when I hit it, it felt good,” Hrozek said. “It was a big adrenaline rush.”

Brad Secrist looked overmatched at the plate, going 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts, before Hrozek replaced him in right field to start the eighth inning. Hrozek struck out against Justin Cryer with two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth, but his dramatic double in the 10 th erased that disappointment.

“I thought I had a chance to win the game [in the eighth ], so I had to redeem myself,” Hrozek said. “There’s nothing better than an extra-inning win.”

Friday was the second consecutive night Hrozek has come through off the bench for Arkansas. After pinch hitting for Jeff Nutt on Thursday, Hrozek went 1 for 3 with 1 home run and 3 RBI.

Hrozek entered the game with 3 home runs, 16 RBI and a. 306 batting average in 62 atbats.

“He’s clutch, and there’s nothing else to say about him,” said left fielder Casey Coon, who went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and 2 walks Friday. “He came up big for us [Thursday ] and came up even bigger for us today.”
