Speedster ready to do it all Published: Thursday, July 26, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — Jarius Wright wants to bring his versatility to Arkansas. The Razorbacks should be happy Wright is bringing his speed, as well. Wright, a 5-11, 175-pound receiver at Warren, orally committed to Arkansas late Tuesday night. Wright recently visited Arkansas for the Razorbacks ’ Senior Camp and told Razorbacks offensive coordinator David Lee he would talk with his mother, Jeanette Hooper, before making a decision. “Coach Lee text-messaged me and asked, ‘How did that talk go ?’” Wright said. “I called him and told him I was ready to be a Razorback. He told me how happy they were I was going to be a Razorback.
“ I called Houston Nutt after that, and he said he was one of the happiest men in the world. He said he wouldn’t be able to sleep.” A lot of opposing coaches have the same problem. Wright, who has run a 4. 45-second 40-yard dash, caught 51 passes for 1, 086 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior. He returned three kickoffs and two punts for touchdowns. “He’s so versatile, and he can do so many things,” Warren Coach Bo Hembree said. “I know he’s the fastest kid I’ve ever coached. He can break a big play at any time.” Wright also plays quarterback, defensive back and returns kicks for the Lumberjacks. He wants to play offense and defense — and special teams — for the Razorbacks. “They want me as an athlete, not just as a receiver,” Wright said. “I would like to do them all. I want to prove I can do them. I want to play as much at each position as I can.” Arkansas offered Wright a scholarship before his junior year. Wright was a member of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s Super Sophomore and All-Junior teams. “I don’t really know what they see in me, but I’m fast,” Wright said. “They said I’m a difference maker. They said I can make a big impact on Arkansas’ program.” Hembree said Wright should be able to contribute as a return man immediately for the Razorbacks. But his return stats might not be too impressive this year because Hembree doubts teams will kick to Wright. “He has a knack for making people miss,” Hembree said. “You’ve got combine guys and you’ve got football guys. He’s a football guy.” Wright helped Warren reach the Class 4 A state championship game in 2006 when the Lumberjacks lost to Nashville 21-20 in double overtime. Wright threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and was stopped just short of the end zone on a potential game-winning two-point conversion attempt. Warren receiver Basmine Jones, a distant cousin of Wright’s, orally committed to Arkansas earlier this summer. Wright said he orally committed early so he could concentrate on helping Warren win a title. “I want to get on with our season and not think about it anymore,” Wright said. “It’s a real big motivation. It will be helpful for us, coming so near.” Yesterday's Most Popular 1. HOG FUTURES JERRY MITCHELL : Hurricane brings Mitchell to Hogs 2. THE RECRUITING GUY : Purifoy's size fits into UA's plans 3.
