Lady Razorbacks from Oklahoma give team boost Published: Friday, August 17, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL FORT SMITH — Arkansas junior golfer Lucy Nunn reports for student orientation today, less than 24 hours after she won her singles match to help Oklahoma wrap up a victory at the Fore State Wortz Cup tournament. Nunn, a native of Lawton, Okla., was one of seven college players who helped Oklahoma take a victory over other amateur teams from Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas. Oklahoma won seven of its 10 matches Thursday after starting the day tied for the lead with Missouri. “A lot of the golfers that I played junior golf or high school golf with are here,” Nunn said. “It’s just a good, fun way to end the summer. You couldn’t ask for any better.” Oklahoma finished with 13 total points, including those earned during Wednesday’s four-ball and foursome matches. Missouri, which was tied with Oklahoma after the first day, finished second with 11. 5 points. Arkansas came in third with 7. 5 points after beginning Thursday with Kansas at 2 points. Kansas finished fourth with 4 points.
Pam Spikes, Lisa Varney, Chelsey Cothran, Julie Oxendine and Meagan Vaughn all won matches for Arkansas, and Andrea Nunez halved hers, on Friday, to propel Arkansas to a strong finish. “We caught some really tough pairings Wednesday and had some close matches that turned out to be losses, but [Thursday ] they all knew they could play and they did,” Arkansas team captain Marth McAllister said. “We couldn’t overcome the lead that they got on us (Wednesday ), but we certainly made a valiant effort.” Arkansas sophomore Alex Schulte also won a singles match for Oklahoma, while former Lady Razorback Courtney Mahon scored a victory for Missouri. Nunn closed out what has been a busy summer on the women’s amateur circuit with a tense match against Missouri’s Mary Kate Bird. Nunn didn’t secure the victory until that 18 th hole, after most matches already had been decided. Golf carts packed with players were clustered around the green on No. 9, the finishing hole for Nunn and Bird, as Bird hit an errant drive and had to punch a second shot into the fairway rather than taking an normal approach shot. Nunn, meanwhile, converted a routine par after a timely and well-placed tee shot. “I absolutely ripped one down the middle of the fairway,” Nunn said. “I hit my approach shot to about 15 feet or so and had an easy two-putt to win it. “ Today was kind of a struggle. We halved a lot of holes with pars and bogeys, but it came down to the last couple of holes and I was able to pull it out with everybody watching.” Nunn posted Arkansas ’ second-best per-round-stroke average last season. Her 75. 55 average trailed only national champion Stacy Lewis (72. 37 ), who returns for her senior season at Arkansas. The Lady Razorbacks failed to advance to the NCAA Championships as a team last season after back-to-back trips in 2005 and 2006, but Nunn said the team is determined to get back under first-year Coach Shauna Estes. Estes was promoted from assistant coach when Kelley Hester accepted a job at Georgia, her alma mater. “I’m going to try and fight Stacy for that No. 1 spot, give her a good run for her money,” Nunn said with a smile. “I’m just really excited about it. I think we’re going to have a good team, and I think Shauna is going to fill Kelley’s shoes and lead us to even bigger and better things.” FORE STATE WORTZ CUP Thursday At Hardscarbble Country Club TEAM SCORES Oklahoma............................................................ 13 Missouri........................................................... 11. 5 Arkansas........................................... 7. 5 Kansas................................................................... 4 MATCH PLAY Chelsea Shriener (Mo. ) def.
