Ex-Hog retiring to coach Published: Wednesday, September 26, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL Corliss Williamson, a former Arkansas Razorbacks All-American, will announce his retirement from the NBA today in North Little Rock. Williamson, 33, who spent 12 years in the NBA, will become an assistant coach at Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock. Arkansas Baptist Coach and Athletic Director Charles Ripley said Williamson has been working with Arkansas Baptist’s post players, and he’s looking forward to getting him on staff. “Every kid wants to get where he got to,” Ripley said. “He’s a wonderful coach. He’s got great work ethic and great personality on the floor. We’re just tickled to death.”
Williamson, 6-7, spent last season with the Sacramento Kings. He was the state’s high school player of year at Russellville in 1992, when he also was named an All-American and the national Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. Williamson signed with Arkansas out of high school and scored 1, 728 points from 1993-1995, putting him eighth on the school’s all-time scoring list. He led Arkansas to the 1994 national championship game as a sophomore, earning tournament MVP honors as the Razorbacks defeated Duke 76-72 for their only national title. Williamson helped the Razorbacks return to the title game the next season, when the Razorbacks lost 89-78 to UCLA. Williamson left Arkansas following his junior season and entered the NBA Draft, where he was taken by the Sacramento Kings with the No. 13 pick in the first round. He also spent time with the Toronto Raptors, the Detroit Pistons and the Philadelphia 76 ers, winning an NBA title with the Pistons in 2004. Williamson averaged 9. 1 points per game last season. He averaged 11. 1 points, 3. 9 rebounds and 1. 2 assists per game for his career. His best season came in 1997-1998, when he averaged 17. 7 points per game for the Kings.
