Visiting Ole Miss cure for QB's ills

Published: Sunday, October 21, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL

OXFORD, Miss. — Arkansas junior quarterback Casey Dick is going to miss playing at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

In two games at Mississippi, including Saturday’s 44-8 victory, Dick has completed 68. 3 percent of his passes for 6 touchdowns with just 2 interceptions.

In 2005 in his first road start as a true freshman, Dick completed 17 of 24 passes for 175 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Razorbacks to a 28-17 victory against the Rebels.

Dick passed for just 96 yards Saturday, but he completed 11 of 17 attempts, including 3 for touchdowns.

“We didn’t throw a lot,” Dick said. “But when we had to make plays in the passing game, we did.”

Dick’s 32-yard pass play to fullback Peyton Hillis set up Arkansas’ second touchdown. He threw a 1-yard pass to tight end Andrew Davie for the Razorbacks’ third touchdown, a 9-yard pass to Hillis for their fourth touchdown and a 14-yard pass to Davie for their fifth touchdown.

The efficient passing complemented the Razorbacks’ rushing game, which piled up 293 yards.

“I think the passing game was where it should be,” Arkansas senior guard Robert Felton said. “We’re a running team. Everybody knows that.

“ But the passes we do throw, we need to be proficient and score the way we were today.”

Dick hit his first seven passes Saturday, extending his streak of consecutive completions at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium to 19. Two years ago, he hit his final 12 passes for 160 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The streak of completions ended for Dick when he missed Lucas Miller in the second quarter on a high throw.

“I didn’t really pay attention to [the streak ], but it was good to keep things going here,” Dick said. “We played good here the last time, too, and we wanted to come in and have the same type of game.”

Arkansas offensive coordinator David Lee said Dick missed some passes he should have hit.

“He’s a knucklehead at times. He’s hard to coach at times,” Lee said. “But overall, I thought he had a good day.

“ He got off to a good start, and that’s really important for him. His confidence is growing.

“ He’s starting to come on a little bit, and that’s really good for us.”

Coming into Saturday’s game, Dick was ranked eighth in the SEC and 83 rd nationally in pass efficiency, completing 51. 7 percent of his attempts for 141. 2 yards per game with 8 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

As the starting quarterback, he also naturally drew a lot of criticism for Arkansas’ 0-3 SEC start.

“You could tell in the huddle Casey was focused and ready to go today,” Davie said. “We’ve all got his back for sure. We don’t doubt his ability.

“ He can play, and today he showed that.”

Dick can play especially well at Ole Miss.
