The No. 1 victories Published: Saturday, November 24, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL Arkansas’ victory over No. 1 LSU on Friday was the fourth time the Razorbacks have defeated a top-ranked team. The previous three: 1964 No. 8 Arkansas 14, No. 1 Texas 13 at Austin, Texas Ken Hatfield’s 81-yard punt return for a touchdown spurred the Razorbacks over the defending national champions and to the school’s first national title. With the scored tied 7-7, Fred Marshall hit Bobby Crockett with a 34-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to give Arkansas the lead. Ernie Koy scored late for Texas, and Coach Darrell Royal elected to go for the two-point conversion and the victory. Koy’s pass to Hix Green fell incomplete. 1965 No. 3 Arkansas 27, No. 1 Texas 24 at Fayetteville In what many call Arkansas’ greatest game, the Razorbacks needed an 80-yard drive in the fourth quarter for the comeback victory, their 17 th in a row. Arkansas took a 20-0 lead in the first half, but Texas roared back and led 24-20 late. Quarterback Jon Brittenum led Arkansas on the final drive, and on third-and-4 at the Texas 15, he hit Bobby Crockett at the 1. Brittenum sneaked in on the next play for the winning score. 1981 Arkansas 42, No. 1 Texas 11 at Fayetteville Two weeks after suffering a stunning loss to Southwest Conference doormat TCU, Arkansas steamrolled Texas for only its second victory over the Longhorns in 10 years behind the rushing, receiving and punt returns of Gary Anderson.
