5 UA coaches set to join Nutt Published: Saturday, December 01, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL Former Arkansas head football Coach Houston Nutt told The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson, Miss., that at least five of his assistants from Arkansas will make the jump to Mississippi. Offensive coordinator David Lee, tight ends coach James Shibest, running game coordinator Mike Markuson, defensive line coach Tracy Rocker and recruiting coordinator Chris Vaughn all have decided to come to Ole Miss after they coach the Razorbacks’ bowl game, Nutt said. “It’s good to know I’ve got some guys that can help me with recruiting,” Nutt told The Clarion-Ledger on Friday. “We’ll really have to hit the ground running.” Nutt told The Clarion-Ledger he plans to return to Oxford on Sunday. Nutt was introduced as Mississippi’s coach Wednesday.
Two coaches from former Ole Miss Coach Ed Orgeron’s staff — defensive coordinator John Thompson and receivers coach Hugh Freeze — are interested in staying and will meet with Nutt on Sunday. Thompson was Nutt’s defensive coordinator at Arkansas in 2000 and 2001. Thompson is under contract at Ole Miss for two more years. Nutt signed a four-year, $ 7. 4 million deal to coach Ole Miss on Monday night and was presented to the school Wednesday. Nutt won 75 games at Arkansas over 10 seasons before resigning just hours before he took the Ole Miss job. The Clarion-Ledger’s report did not address how the five assistants will split their time between Arkansas’ bowl preparations and their duties at Ole Miss or if they will recruit for Ole Miss while still working for Arkansas. Markuson and Lee told the Democrat-Gazette on Tuesday that they planned to coach through the bowl game. Lee was contacted late Friday night by the Democrat-Gazette and said he would have no problem working for Ole Miss while trying to get Arkansas ready for a bowl game. “It’s not hard for me,” Lee said. “I have tunnel vision.” More Stories From: DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE PRESS SERVICES · Ole Miss freshman beats UA's Strode · SEC WOMEN : Kentucky runs past Arkansas in 2nd half · NOTES : Rebels give Nutt contract extension · SWAC : UAPB uses Mallett to batter opponent · SEC WOMEN : Arkansas defense overwhelms Pacific Yesterday's Most Popular 1.
