AP ALL-AMERICA TEAM : McFadden sets standard Published: Wednesday, December 12, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — Thanks to Darren McFadden, Arkansas finally has a two-time Associated Press first-team All-American on offense. McFadden, a junior tailback from Little Rock, earned that distinction Tuesday, when the AP’s All-America teams were announced. Arkansas’ only other players to earn first-team All-America honors twice were defensive linemen — tackle Loyd Phillips in 1965 and 1966, when he also won the Outland Trophy, and end Billy Ray Smith Jr. Joining McFadden in being honored as All-Americans this season were three Razorbacks named to the second-team offense: junior center Jonathan Luigs, senior guard Robert Felton and junior allpurpose back Felix Jones.
Four is the most Razorbacks ever to earn AP All-America honors in the same season. The previous high was three last season when McFadden was a first-teamer, with Luigs and offensive tackle Tony Ugoh as third-teamers. Luigs last week won the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s top center, but Wake Forest senior Steve Justice was the first-team center on the AP All-America team. McFadden, who this season has rushed for a school-record 1, 725 yards and set an SEC record with 2, 172 all-purpose yards, has a shot to become the first three-time AP All-American in Arkansas history if he returns for his senior season. McFadden has said he won’t make a decision on his future until after the Razorbacks play Missouri in the Cotton Bowl, but he is expected to declare for the NFL Draft. Being named a first-team All-American for the second year in a row is the latest honor for Mc-Fadden, who last week repeated as winner of the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back, finished second in the Heisman Trophy balloting for the second year in a row and was picked as the national player of the year by the Walter Camp Foundation and The Sporting News. He also was named SEC Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Jones averaged 31. 3 yards as a kickoff returner this season to rank third nationally and returned kickoffs for touchdowns against Troy and Kentucky. Luigs and Felton anchored an offensive line that helped Arkansas set a school record with 478 points and rank second in the SEC in total offense (457. 4 yards per game ) and scoring offense (39. 8 points ). McFadden was one of four SEC players on the AP first team along with Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, the Heisman Trophy winner; LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, and LSU safety Craig Steltz.
