Greenwood QB commits to UA Published: Monday, December 17, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL Greenwood quarterback Tyler Wilson orally committed to the Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday after switching his pledge from Tulsa. Wilson, 6-3, 185 pounds, 4. 7 seconds in the 40-yard dash, changed his commitment to the Razorbacks after visiting the Arkansas campus Sunday. He became the Hogs ’ 20 th commitment in the 2008 recruiting class. Wilson helped Greenwood win its third consecutive state championship this season. He completed 294 of 473 passes for 3, 939 yards and 43 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. Wilson and his mother and father traveled to Fayetteville to meet with Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino, offensive coordinator Paul Petrino and assistant coach Tim Horton. Wilson said Bobby Petrino was pleased with his commitment and understood Wilson wanting to inform Tulsa co-offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn of his decision before going public.
“I told him [Bobby Petrino ] I had to take care of business at other places and he told me to do that and do it in the right manner, so I did and now we’re here,” said Wilson, who was the starting quarterback for the past two 5 A state championship teams. The Wilsons arrived at the Broyles Complex at 2: 30 p. m., and after a tour of the facilities, they sat down with Petrino and learned of the scholarship offer. “Actually, Coach Bobby Petrino extended the offer,” Wilson said. “It was really a great time for me. I’m excited about Arkansas football with Coach Petrino coming in and running a wonderful offense. An offense that was very successful, a team that was very successful at Louisville.” Wilson was equally impressed with both Petrinos. “I think they’re both great guys,” Wilson said. They’ve been very successful, and I don’t think they’re going to settle for anything less than being successful. They’re going to lead the way in a wonderful era of Arkansas football. It’s going to be exciting, and I look forward to being a part of it and I’m honored to be a part of it. ” Wilson said he believes Greenwood’s success over the past few years and his ability to stay in the pocket, avoid pressure while making quick decisions and good throws in tough situations led to Arkansas offering him a scholarship. Wilson thinks there are some similarities in the offense he ran at Greenwood and the new offense at Arkansas. He said that played a role in him picking the Razorbacks. “It’s similar. I don’t think it’s exact,” he said “There’s similarities in concepts. The Spread concept for sure. I think that it’s going to be close. I think it’s going to be a transition for me, definitely the college game. But I think it’s a very manageable transition and a transition I think I’ll be comfortable with and I’m excited for Arkansas football. Actually it [the offense ] was one of the main factors in me choosing a school.” Wilson threw for 8, 161 yards during his career, completing 588 of 907 passes, a 65 percent completion rate. He had 93 touchdown passes and 28 interceptions. Wilson said he had 12 or 13 scholarship offers, including Nebraska, Arizona, Alabama, Tulsa, Missouri, Kansas, Oregon and LSU. Wilson knows there are a few areas he needs to improve on before he gets to the UA campus next year. “I think I need to get in the weight room and get stronger, mentally as well a little bit,” he said. “I think the knowledge of the game, be a little bit more prepared for college ball.” Sugar Land, Texas, cornerback Junior Okpara will announce his final decision today. He will choose from Arkansas, Boston College and Missouri. Okpara, 6-1, 175, 4. 48, orally committed to the Razorbacks over the summer but reopened his recruitment after Houston Nutt’s resignation. He visited Boston College last weekend and visited Missouri this weekend.
