THE RECRUITING GUY : UA recruits know what they want under the tree Published: Tuesday, December 25, 2007 PRINT E-MAIL There is more to Arkansas ’ 2008 football commitments than height, weight and 40-yard dash time. To a man, they will be spending time with family today, opening presents and dreaming about the future. Camden Fairview quarterback Jim Youngblood said the best gift he could receive would be a promise from teammate De’Anthony Curtis to sign a national letter of intent with Arkansas on Feb. 6. Youngblood’s New Year’s resolution ? “Get up to Fayetteville next year and make an impression,” Youngblood said. “Make an impact early. I want to improve my work ethic so I’m ready to go as soon as I get there.” Greenwood quarterback Tyler Wilson knows his Christmas wish will have to be something he earns.
“I would say a couple of pounds on the bench press,” Wilson said. “That’s probably what I would say.” Dacula, Ga., safety Khiry Battle said being able to control time is what he would like underneath the Christmas tree. “I guess it’s the only thing you can’t put a value on,” Battle said, “it’s the most priceless and precious thing. Once it’s gone, you can’t do anything about it.” New Year’s resolution ? “Stay focused, I want my brother [Northwestern defensive back Deante Battle ] to be drafted in the NFL and when I come to Arkansas I want to make an immediate impact,” he said. Fort Smith Northside offensive lineman Austin Eoff, who had anterior cruciate ligament surgery on his left knee Thursday, had a couple of wishes for his ideal Christmas gift. “Probably knowing my knee would recover and be a 100 percent,” Eoff said. “That or a 12-guage [shotgun ].” Russellville offensive lineman Matt Hall wants nothing more than Arkansas hiring a good offensive line coach. “That would be great,” Hall said. Running back Devin Thomas of San Antonio said he was tired of dealing with music CD’s and would like to find an MP 3 player under the Christmas tree this year. Thomas was undecided on his New Year’s resolution. Camden Fairview defensive lineman Lavunce Askew wants to spread joy to his family. “Buy people gifts and not receive, because my gift was received when they took care of me when I was little and taking care of me now,” Askew said. Warren wide receiver Chris Gragg will visit his dad’s 97-yearold grandfather and have dinner with his 84-year-old grandmother on his mom’s side. “We usually go get my grandparents that are in the nursing home and bring them together and eat Christmas dinner,” Gragg said. “My little brother tries to wake up real early and get his presents at about 4: 30 in the morning.” Gragg’s wish is for new transportation. “I would probably want a ’ 07-’ 08 Tahoe,” he said. “I’ve wanted a Tahoe for a long time. I want it all black.” Gragg said his New Year’s resolution is to work out and get bigger.
