THE RECRUITING GUY : Mallett's arrival fails to change commitments' plans Published: Thursday, January 17, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL Former Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett is officially enrolled at Arkansas, and that hasn't changed anything for the Razorbacks' two quarterback recruits. Greenwood quarterback Tyler Wilson and Camden Fairview quarterback Jim Youngblood say they remain solid in their oral commitments to the Razorbacks. "I'm not backing out at all," Wilson said. "I'm committed to be an Arkansas Razorback, and that's really where I stand. I'm going to go in there and battle next year. " Everybody is going to be kind of starting out with the same offense. I think the guys that have been there are going to have a little bit of a heads up with the offense early, but then we'll get several workouts and compete." Wilson, 6-3, 185 pounds, 4. 7 seconds in the 40-yard dash, led Greenwood to back-to-back Class 5 A state championships and was name MVP of the 2007 championship game. He threw for more than 8, 000 yards and 93 touchdowns in his career.
Wilson said he isn't concerned about eventually competing with Mallett at quarterback. "I'm going to go in there and not really pay a whole lot of attention to that," said Wilson, who threw for 3, 939 yards and 43 touchdowns his senior year while completing 62 percent of his passes. "I'm just going to do my job and compete with the best of my ability, and things will work out with hard work and doing things right." Youngblood echoed Wilson's comments. "It won't affect me," Youngblood said. "I feel like picking the school that you want to go to and play your ball at is solely based on if you can be happy at that school. If you can see yourself there and if that's where your heart is at, then it doesn't matter what the depth chart looks like or what the roster looks like. " The best guy is going to play. Whoever works the hardest will earn it. I'm sure whoever is there will make the rest of the quarterbacks better. As long as you're happy where you're at, that's all that matters." Youngblood ran a balanced attack with multiple weapons this year at Camden Fairview. He passed for 2, 533 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for more than 600 yards last season while leading his team to the semifinals of the Class 5 A playoffs, where it lost 24-21 to Greenwood. He finished his career with 5, 562 passing yards, 43 touchdowns and more than 1, 600 rushing yards. Youngblood said he has heard people talk about how Mallett will take over after redshirting a season. He said he doesn't worry about it and plans to let his play speak for itself. "I've heard that he's going to take over in 2009," Youngblood said. "When I get up there next year, I'm going to prove myself. And whenever I get the chance to get on the field, I'm going to show everybody what I can do. " Hopefully I'll assume that role and nobody will get a chance." JOHNSON VISITS TACKLE Arkansas linebackers coach Reggie Johnson traveled to the Birmingham, Ala., area Sunday for an in-home visit with highly-rated defensive tackle Marcel Dareus of Huffman Magnet High School. "It went good," Dareus said. "He said he had only been there a week and he said the first place he stopped was to see Cameron [Henderson ], and then came over here and spoke to me and my mom. We sat here and talked a little bit. He seems like a real nice person." Dareus, 6-4, 280, 4. 9, is one of the most dominating defensive linemen in the nation and has the ability to provide immediate help wherever he goes. He said he had a great time on an official visit to Alabama over the weekend but still plans to visit North Carolina on Jan. 18, Auburn on Jan. 25 and Arkansas on Feb. 1. He said he won't make a decision until signing day, Feb. 6. Dareus said he's impressed with Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino. He said he thinks Arkansas is in a rebuilding mode and that he could come in and contribute early. Alabama is considered the favorite to sign Dareus. He said he made an 18 on his ACT and is confident he can improve his grade-point average enough to be eligible. JOYNER LOOKS ELSEWHERE Genesis One point guard Terrence Joyner of Mendenhall, Miss., is going to look at other schools while the NCAA Clearinghouse reviews his academic standing. Joyner signed with Arkansas during the early signing period in November. He said he still believes he'll be cleared, but for now he'll look elsewhere. "It all ended on a good note," Joyner said. "I really liked Arkansas. I liked the coaches, and I think they have a good future. " I believe I'm eventually going to get cleared. It wasn't just me wanting out of Arkansas. Everything was mutual." Joyner said he is interested in Tennessee and New Mexico State, and that Virginia called him Wednesday.
