Hogs set season high for 3-pointers vs. Tigers — again Published: Thursday, February 21, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — All it takes is an LSU uniform to start the three-pointers falling for the Razorbacks. Arkansas made a seasonhigh 11 three-pointers in its 87-61 victory against the Tigers on Wednesday at Walton Arena. The Razorbacks’ previous high was 10, set against LSU in a 68-52 victory Jan. 26 in Baton Rouge. The Razorbacks made six consecutive three-pointers in the first half and had a stretch of 9 of 10. Arkansas made 9 of 13 in the first half and finished 11 of 23 (47. 8 percent ). Arkansas entered the game last in the SEC averaging just 5. 58 three-pointers a game. The Razorbacks’ three-point shooting percentage of 33 percent was 10 th in the conference.
Three-point shooting sparked the Razorbacks’ 21-0 first-half run that turned a 14-14 game into a blowout. Four Razorbacks made three-pointers during the run. “[Wednesday ] was just one of them nights,” said guard Stefan Walsh, who made 3 of 5 attempts. “It could have been a night when someone hit one and then we missed it. It’s just the luck of the draw. They fell for us.” It was more than luck. The Tigers concentrated on doubling the Razorbacks’ big men inside and stopping Arkansas ’ penetration, and that opened some shots for the guards on the perimeter. “We have to give a lot of credit to our bigs,” said guard Patrick Beverley, who made 2 of 4 attempts. “They force a lot of double-teams in the post and when that happens they kick it out for a three. “ After you hit the first one, you kind of feel it from there. The crowd’s behind you and it kind of falls into place from there. We were very confident.” Arkansas Coach John Pelphrey said LSU’s strong interior defense almost forces perimeter shooting. He said the Razorbacks did a good job of not forcing shots when another pass would find an open shooter. “It’s very difficult to get shots off at the basket against them,” Pelphrey said. “The way they play defense, there are going to be perimeter shots. If you’re going to live with something, you’re going to live with that.” Welsh didn’t start the game but finished with 10 points. He entered the game making 27 percent of his three-point attempts, and 18 percent in conference play. “I’ve been struggling all year from the three-point line, but Coach told me to keep shooting,” Welsh said. “He has never told me to stop taking shots. It was just one of them nights that my shot started to fall for me. “ Everybody’s shots were falling.” LSU Coach Butch Pierre echoed Walsh’s assertion. “They got a rhythm going,” Pierre said. “It seemed as though the right guys were taking the right shots. They got in a flow.” LSU entered the game wanting Walsh to shoot from behind the three-point line, given his conference struggles. That plan obviously didn’t work out. “It was pretty frustrating,” LSU guard Garrett Temple said. “He wasn’t the only one hitting the threes. I mean they hit nine.” Walsh said three-point shooting is considerably easier with no one guarding you. “They were leaving shooters wide open out there,” Walsh said. “I hope nine times out of 10, we can knock down open looks.” That doesn’t seem to be a problem for the Razorbacks against LSU.
