COLLEGE BASEBALL : Murphree’s 2-run HR carries UA Published: Sunday, February 24, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas used a repeat formula Saturday to beat Wright State a second time. Aaron Murphree hit a tworun home run and Arkansas got another strong performance from its bullpen during its 5-4 comeback victory at Baum Stadium. A crowd of 1, 742 watched Arkansas fall behind for the second consecutive game as the Raiders took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Murphree put Arkansas ahead 5-4 with a two-run home run in the sixth, and the Razorbacks (2-0 ) held on despite four errors and some base-running mistakes.
Arkansas fell behind 4-0 Friday before rallying for 9-4 victory with the help of a three-run home run by Andy Wilkins. Wilkins went 3 for 3 Saturday for the Razorbacks, who are hitting. 360 with two outs through two games. “Both teams gave each other runs, and it was kind of ugly,” Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn said. “It looked like an earlyseason game, but I want to see us play better. “ If the younger guys were struggling, I’d probably understand it. It’s some of the older guys struggling, and maybe they’re pressing because they think they have to do too much.” Relief pitcher Cliff Springston twice threw poorly past first base on pickoff attempts, and Tim Smalling made two errors on one play when he dropped a popup in shallow center field and threw wildly back toward the infield. Logan Forsythe failed to run with two outs from second base when Brian Adams dropped a fly ball in left field, but Forsythe scored on the next play when Wilkins delivered an RBI single. Wright State (0-2 ) made three errors while losing again after taking an early lead. “Obviously, you’d like to see your team hold a lead, but we’re playing against a great team,” Wright State Coach Rob Cooper said. “Van Horn always gets his team ready, and Arkansas is a team that wins. “ I’m disappointed, but I also saw some good things from our players out there.” Bryce DeWeese allowed 3 unearned runs in 5 innings for Wright State. Murphree hit an oppositefield home run to right field after grounding into a double play in his previous plate appearance. The 6-5 senior has started both games after playing in only 16 games last season with eight starts. “It’s been exciting to play in both games,” said Murphree, who started at first base Friday and moved to designated hitter Saturday. “I’ve got to keep getting better every day and see where it goes.” Arkansas received another strong performance from its bullpen after Shaun Seibert 1 gave up 3 runs and 3 hits in 2 / 3 innings. Springston allowed only an 2 unearned run in 3 / 3 innings for the victory, and Travis Hill picked up the save by pitching 2 1 / 3 scoreless innings. Seibert made his first start in nearly 11 months Saturday after missing most of last season because of an elbow injury. Seibert pitched two scoreless innings before Justin Parker hit a two-run double and R. J. Gundolff an RBI single in the third. “I’m not satisfied, but I’m not completely down about [my performance ],” Seibert said. “Hopefully, I’ll get a chance next week to build on what I did out here today.” Arkansas will start its second freshman pitcher of the series when Kendall Korbal opposes Michael Meintel in today’s game at 12: 05 p. m. Freshman James Mahler started and lasted only 1 1 / 3 innings in Arkansas’ victory Friday. Yesterday's Most Popular 1. HOG FUTURES JERRY MITCHELL : Hurricane brings Mitchell to Hogs 2.
