COLLEGE BASEBALL : Third comeback for Hogs in sweep Published: Monday, February 25, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas received contributions from players old and new Sunday to complete a sweep over Wright State. Senior Aaron Murphree had three hits and junior Logan Forsythe added two hits and a key defensive play as Arkansas defeated Wright State 7-3 before 1, 912 at Baum Stadium. The Razorbacks (3-0 ) swept the Raiders (0-3 ) after falling behind for the third consecutive game. Arkansas started three freshmen in the middle of the lineup Sunday, and all three contributed. Andy Wilkins and Jacob House each had two RBI and Brett Eibner pitched three innings in relief for the victory after beginning the game in center field. Murphree, who played in only 16 games last season, hit two doubles and a single while starting his third consecutive game. He hit. 600 for the series with 3 doubles, a home run and 6 RBI.
“We had some young guys do a good job and gain some experience this weekend,” Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn said. “We were down two, but we never felt like we were going to lose the game. We chipped away, and it was a better day, from the second half on.” Sunday’s game was mostly wellplayed and a marked improvement from Saturday, when the teams combined for seven errors. Arkansas was trailing 2-0 in the fifth inning when Forsythe saved a run with a backhanded, diving stop at third base to get T. J. Gundolff at first. The play came after Murphree dropped a fly ball in right field with two outs to help Wright State increase its lead. Forsythe led off the sixth inning with a double and scored ahead of Murphree’s two-run double to put Arkansas ahead 3-2. Wright State tied the game before Forsythe added a single during a fourrun, seventh-inning rally to put Arkansas ahead 7-3. “[Logan ] made four big-league type plays,” Van Horn said. “He was up five times, had two hits, a walk and hit two other line drives. He had a great day.” Forsythe, who played for the USA National Team during the summer, was more impressed with the play of Arkansas’ newcomers this weekend than his own performance. Kendall Korbal and Eibner combined to pitch seven strong innings Sunday while Wilkins and House combined for 4 RBI to aid the comeback. “It’s hard to sweep anybody, but our team was real focused,” said Forsythe, who led Arkansas last year with a. 347 batting average. “We had some younger guys in there this weekend, and they came through for us. That was really good to see, especially being the first series.” Wright State led 2-0 before Arkansas began its third comeback of the weekend. Murphree hit a double and scored Arkansas ’ first run after an infield single by Andrew Darr in the fifth. Murphree had another double in the sixth, following a double by Forsythe and a walk to Eibner to put Arkansas ahead. The Razorbacks regained the lead for good with 4 runs on 4 hits in the seventh, including a two-run single by Wilkins and a two-run double by House. Arkansas continues its homestand this week with games against Southeast Missouri on Tuesday and Kansas on Wednesday. The Razorbacks play 10 of their first 13 games at home and open conference action March 14 against Georgia at Baum Stadium. Yesterday's Most Popular 1.
