COLLEGE BASEBALL : Two bad innings sink UA Published: Sunday, March 02, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Two disastrous innings led to Arkansas’ first loss of the season Saturday night. Texas A&M produced fiveand four-run innings to defeat Arkansas 15-7 before 6, 371 in the Aggie Classic at Olsen Field. Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn also was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing a call at first base, drawing the biggest cheer of the night from a boisterous student section. Kyle Colligan and Kevin Gonzalez hit home runs for Texas A&M (6-2 ), which outhit Arkansas 14-12. Colligan hit a leadoff home run against freshman starter Kendal Korbal, who 1 lasted 2 / 3 innings in his matchup with Texas A&M freshman Barrett Loux. Jacob House hit a two-run home run for the Razorbacks (5-1 ), who will face Ohio State (4-1 ) at 11 a. m. today on the final day of the Aggie Classic. “Texas A&M is a lot farther along than we are, obviously, and they got after us,” Van Horn said. “Those two big innings were killers for us, and whenever we made a mistake, they took advantage of it. “ We’ve got a quick turnaround, and we’ll probably call it a successful tournament if we can win with all the injuries we’ve had.”
Texas A&M gained control of the slugfest early with five runs in the third inning to take an 8-2 lead. Most of the damage came with two outs as the Aggies roughed up Arkansas starter Kendal Korbal and reliever Mike Bolinger. Arkansas cut the lead to 8-5 before Texas A&M rallied for four more runs in the fifth inning. The Aggies had four hits in the inning, and Arkansas helped by hitting a batter with the bases loaded and missing a tag at first base when a runner appeared hung up. Van Horn wasn’t around to see that mishap, having already been tossed earlier in the inning after arguing a doubleplay call. “We needed a double play there and [the umpire ] didn’t give it to us,” Van Horn said. “Everybody in the ballpark knew the runner was out. I was frustrated and one thing led to another. “ I got at him, and he got back at me.” Texas A&M’s rally in the third started slowly when Korbal retired consecutive batters following an error to open the inning. But the Aggies erupted as Jose Duran and Brian Ruggiano hit RBI singles to drive away Korbal, then Darby Brown hit an RBI single and Brodie Greene an RBI double against Bolsinger. Arkansas pulled to within 8-5 in the fourth after an RBI double by Andy Wilkins, who was 3 for 4. Andrew Darr contributed a pinch-hit single while batting for Logan Forsythe, who tweaked a hamstring injury and could be out for a few games. “We’re fighting it right now with [Sean Jones ] out and now Logan, who got hurt fielding a ball,” Van Horn said. “Logan won’t play [today ], and we’re just hoping to have him back by next weekend.” Ohio State defeated Louisiana Tech 7-4 Saturday to hand the Bulldogs their second consecutive loss after a 6-0 start this season.
