RECRUITING RECRUITING : Young quarterbacks show skills at camp Published: Sunday, March 02, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL SPRINGDALE — The South Regional Combine was held Saturday at All-Star Sports Arena with a large group of talent on hand. A quarterback skills camp was held before the combine, with a couple of underclassmen among the more impressive athletes. West Fork freshman Kiehl Frazier, 6-2, 195, and Warren sophomore Hayden Smith, 6-0, 183, both felt the camp helped them. “I feel like I did pretty good,” said Frazier, who helped lead West Fork’s junior high team to a 9-1 record this past season before moving up to the varsity at the end of the year. “I haven’t thrown a football in a while, but today I had my form down.”
Former Arkansas quarterback Jason Allen worked with the quarterbacks, and Frazier said he was appreciative of the chance to learn from someone such as Allen. “We did throwing drills and then got in groups and worked on our footwork,” Frazier said. “It helped me out a lot. A lot of people don’t know how to throw yet with good form, and these camps help teach you how to throw it.” Frazier knows West Fork isn’t a regular stop for college recruiters, but he hopes that will change in the Class of 2011. “I think this helps get me noticed,” Frazier said. “There’s a bunch of bigger coaches here who will talk about the players who they think are good.” Frazier is a do-it-all athlete. In addition to quarterbacking, he plays shooting guard for the basketball team and is a center fielder for the baseball team. “I also pitch some for the baseball team,” Frazier said. “Football is my favorite sport, and baseball is second with basketball next.” Frazier will likely be highly recruited, but he said Saturday one school has a big advantage. “I like Arkansas,” Frazier said. “I thought the hiring of Bobby Petrino was very good. I would like to go there now because we’re not just mainly a run team.” Smith helped lead the Lumberjacks to another impressive season. Smith started as a sophomore and completed 180 of 329 passes for 3, 841 yards and 45 touchdowns. “I had a great time working with Jason [Allen ], getting different throwing techniques,” Smith said. “I improved my game. He showed me a lot of things I can take into next season.” Smith said he greatly benefited as a sophomore by having four wide receivers to throw to who all are headed to Arkansas. “Being around the guys last year and working with them was great,” Smith said. “I got a chance to throw to some guys going to Arkansas. I believe next year we will be just as good, but we just have to work hard in the off-season and everything should be fine.” Smith said he’s trying to continue to improve all aspects of his game but feels there is one particular area that needs work. “My footwork here and there,” Smith said. “My quickness, I can always work on that. My form is pretty good right now, but I need to work on my drops and things like that.” Smith said attending Saturday’s event provided a great chance to compare himself to other quarterbacks. Lake Hamilton’s Phillip Butterfield was one of the top college prospects present Saturday. “He’s a great quarterback,” Smith said. “He shows great leadership on and off the field. It’s good to be around guys to compete with like him.” More Stories From: OTIS KIRK · RECRUITING : Fayetteville duo expected to draw plenty of interest · RECRUITING : Dumas WR Dennis latest star to emerge · RECRUITING : Jackson commits after campus visit · RECRUITING : Pine Bluff speedster turns heads with 4.29-second 40 · RECRUITING : Dyer, Mosley impress at Southwest Elite Combine Yesterday's Most Popular 1.
