COLLEGE BASEBALL : Arkansas shows off its power

Published: Monday, March 03, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — A couple of Texans helped Arkansas escape the Aggie Classic with a winning record.

Aaron Murphree hit tworun home runs in consecutive at-bats and Cliff Springston pitched six innings in relief as Arkansas defeated Ohio State 8-6 Sunday at Olsen Stadium.

Arkansas used four home runs to rally from a 5-2 deficit, then had to sweat out the ninth. Ohio State had the tying runs on base in the final inning, but Arkansas’ Travis Hill picked up his third save when Cory Rupert lined into a double play at shortstop to end the game.

Arkansas (6-1 ) finished 2-1 in the Aggie Classic and ended on a high note after being pounded 15-7 by Texas A&M on Saturday night.

“Springston did a tremendous job out of the bullpen and gave us a chance to catch up,” Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn said. “It got a little scary there in the ninth, but fortunately they lined into a double play.

“ We have a long ways to go, but I was proud of the way this team bounced back.”

Not all of the news was good for Arkansas, which lost another player to injury. Wayne Hrozek became Arkansas’ second center fielder sidelined by a broken hand after he was hit on the wrist while batting in the seventh inning.

The injuries are beginning to add up for the Razorbacks.

Hrozek joined senior Sean Jones, who has yet to play this season because of a broken hand, on the injured list. Junior third baseman Logan Forsythe did not play Sunday after he tweaked a hamstring injury against Texas A&M on Saturday night. Freshman outfielder / pitcher Brett Eibner is also on the mend after hurting his shoulder while diving for a ball Saturday.

“Basically, all three of my center fielders are hurt and I might have to take the redshirt off somebody,” Van Horn said.

Murphree and Springston had strong tournaments while playing before family and friends in their home state. Murphree hit a gamewinning home run Friday in a 9-8 victory over Louisiana Tech, then added two opposite-field home runs Sunday against Ohio State (4-2 ).

Arkansas took the lead for the first time, 6-5, on Murphree’s home run in the fifth.

“My whole family was here this weekend except my sister [Jordan ], who plays basketball at Texas Tech,” said Murphree, who grew up in Weatherford, Texas. “They don’t get to see me much, and it feels good to have some good games while they were here.”

Springston (2-0 ), a Baylor transfer from Lorena, Texas, shut down Ohio State after Shaun Seibert was hit hard and knocked out in the third inning. The junior lefthander rolled after giving up an RBI single in the third and retired 12 consecutive batters during one stretch.

He allowed an RBI triple to Zach Hurley in the eighth and a single to Tony Kennedy in the ninth before Hill stopped the Buckeyes.

“I was really concentrating on throwing strikes when I came into the game, and it worked out for me,” said Springston, who had no walks and three strikeouts. “It feels good to be able to contribute because the wheels came off for really the first time against Texas A&M.”

Ryan Cisterna and Chase Leavitt joined Murphree in hitting home runs for Arkansas. Andy Wilkins had an RBI double and played well defensively while replacing Forsythe at third. Wilkins, who had started three games at first base and two at designated hitter, began a double play in the fifth to keep the Buckeyes from scoring.

He’ll likely be back at third base Tuesday when Arkansas plays Southern Dakota State to open a five-game homestand at Baum Stadium.

“Andy made all the plays he’s supposed to, and that’s all I ask him to do,” Van Horn said. “He’s got an accurate arm, and it’s nice to see him move to third and pick us up.

“ He might have to play there for a while until we get some of these injured guys back.” State college roundup LAMAR 4, ARKANSAS STATE 0

BEAUMONT, Texas — Arkansas State lost the final game of the Lamar Cardinal Classic to the host team, being held scoreless on six hits.

Lamar scored its first run on a double-play grounder in the first inning, then made it 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI infield single by Steven Tucker. Jeff Vickers added an RBI single with two out in the fifth, and Lamar scored its final run on a sacrifice fly by Brian Taylor.

Guy Brown and Brandon Eller led ASU with two hits each. NORTHERN IOWA 7, UALR 4

Northern Iowa’s Guido Fonseca struck out 11 batters in 7 1 / 3 innings to lead the Panthers (4-4 ) past UALR (1-7 ) at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock.

Fonseca (2-0 ) allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk. Chris Lopez hit a home run in the second inning to give Northern Iowa a 2-0 lead, but UALR tied it on a home run by Greg McCarthy in the bottom of the fourth. CENTRAL ARKANSAS 15, MISSOURI STATE 4

CONWAY — Central Arkansas (5-3 ) had 19 hits in an easy victory over Missouri State (5-2 ) at UCA Field.

Senior outfielder Chris Houk led UCA, going 3 for 5 with a three-run home run and a double. Designated hitter Richie Irvin went 4 for 4 with 5 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Down 2-0 after Missouri State’s Ben Carlson homered in the first inning, UCA scored seven runs in the bottom of the second. Houk hit his home run in the second and Irvin had an RBI single.
