In the lane Published: Wednesday, March 05, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL OXFORD, Miss. — Three Nutt brothers — Little Rock natives Houston, Danny and Dickey — were Tad Pad turns into Nutt house in Tad Smith Coliseum on Tuesday night to watch the Arkansas-Ole Miss game. Houston Nutt was Arkansas’ head football coach the past 10 years before resigning after last season and being hired to the same position at Ole Miss. Nutt said he’s enjoying his new job and that his family is settling into life at Ole Miss. Danny Nutt, a former Arkansas assistant coach, has been hired for an administrative position with the Rebels.
Dickey Nutt resigned under pressure as Arkansas State’s head basketball coach last month just short of completing his 13 th season at ASU. The fourth Nutt brother, Dennis, is a scout for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats. Evans returns Arkansas assistant coach Rob Evans returned to the arena where he was Ole Miss’ head coach for six seasons from 1993-1998. Evans led the Rebels to an 86-81 record, including SEC West titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 1997 and 1998 before he took over at Arizona State. Ole Miss had just one NCAA Tournament appearance in school history (1981 ) before Evans became the Rebels’ coach. “It’s good to be back, but I’m trying to focus on the game and not let it be a distraction,” Evans said 90 minutes before tipoff. “I’ll probably reflect on it during the trip back home, but I can’t get emotional about it during the game.” During the pregame introductions, the Ole Miss public address announcer noted Evans’ return and he received a warm ovation from the fans. Senior night Ole Miss forward Jermey Parnell, who’s from Gosnell, was among four Rebels seniors honored before Tuesday night’s game, which was the team’s regular-season home finale. Other Ole Miss seniors honored included forwards Dwayne Curtis and Kenny Williams and guard Brian Smith, the son of Minnesota Coach Tubby Smith, who coached at Kentucky the previous 10 years. Tubby Smith and his wife, Donna, made the trip from Minneapolis to attend Tuesday night’s game. 8 th ESPN road game The Arkansas-Ole Miss game marked the Razorbacks’ eighth appearance on ESPN’s family of channels this season, but none has been at Walton Arena. Tuesday night’s game was on ESPN, as was Arkansas’ game at Mississippi State. The Razorbacks played at Oklahoma and at Auburn on ESPN 2 and played Virginia Commonwealth in Puerto Rico on ESPN 2. Arkansas’ game at LSU was on ESPN Classic and games in Puerto Rico against College of Charleston and Providence were on ESPNU. The Razorbacks finally will get an ESPN home game when their regular-season finale against Auburn at 5 p. m. Saturday is televised on ESPN Classic. Practice facility Ole Miss’ Tad Smith Coliseum opened in 1966 and arguably is the least attractive basketball facility in the SEC, but the Rebels apparently won’t be getting a new arena any time soon. Instead, Ole Miss has announced plans to build a $ 12 million practice facility. Late arrival The Big Ten telecast that preceded Arkansas at Ole Miss on ESPN dragged on, then went into overtime. By the time Ohio State had scored an 80-77 victory over the Boilermakers, there was just less than three minutes remaining in the first half at Tad Smith Coliseum with Ole Miss on top 37-28.
