COLLEGE BASEBALL : Sun Devils stay step ahead of Razorbacks

Published: Thursday, March 13, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

TEMPE, ARIZ. — No. 1 Arizona State was too much for Arkansas again.

Brett Wallace hit a three-run home run and Josh Satow pitched 2 7 / 3 innings to lead Arizona State to a 7-4 victory over Arkansas on Wednesday night at Packard Stadium. Satow struck out 7 and allowed 3 hits, including a tworun home run by freshman Andy Wilkins.

Arkansas (11-3 ) fell short again after playing from behind for most of the two-games series. The Razorbacks lost 6-5 on Tuesday, but had two runners on base in the ninth inning before the game ended on consecutive strikeouts. Arizona State (14-0 ) never trailed Wednesday after jumping out to a 4-0 lead against Arkansas freshman starter Brett Eibner (2-1 ). Eibner allowed 4 hits and 1 walked 4 batters in 2 / 3 innings before being replaced by Mike Bolsinger. Satow (2-0 ) retired 11 consecutive batters before Logan Forsythe hit a two-out triple in the sixth inning. Wilkins followed with his fifth home run of the season to cut the Sun Devils’ lead to 4-2.

Arizona State answered with three runs in the seventh to take a 7-2 lead. Paramore hit a two-run single after Arizona State loaded the bases on two walks and an infield single by Raoul Torrez.

Arkansas could do little against Satow, a left-hander, until the sixth inning, when Forsythe hit a triple and came home on Wilkins’ home run. Tim Smalling led off the third with a double, but Satow struck out Ryan Cisterna and Forsythe and got Chase Leavitt on a grounder to end the inning.

Arizona State took a 1-0 lead against Eibner in the second inning on two walks, a bunt single by Marcel Champagnie and a double-play groundout.

Eibner ran into trouble again in the third when he walked two batters and allowed a single by Paramore. Wallace then followed with a three-run home run, his sixth of the season.

Jacob House hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to cut the Sun Devils’ lead to 7-4, but the Sun Devils avoided additional trouble when Aaron Murphree grounded out to end the inning Ben Tschepikow led off the ninth inning with a double, but Tom Rafferty struck out two of the next three batters to end the game.
