COLLEGE BASEBALL : Georgia thumps Arkansas Published: Monday, March 17, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas fans expecting the Razorbacks to recover from Saturday’s collapse instead got more of the same Sunday. Georgia followed its big Saturday night comeback by pounding the Razorbacks 13-2 on Sunday before 3, 961 at Baum Stadium. The Bulldogs (8-7, 2-1 ) lost the series opener 5-1 on Friday, but the series turned dramatically Saturday when Georgia came back from a nine-run deficit to win 15-11. Instead of thinking sweep, Arkansas (12-5, 1-2 ) entered Sunday’s game trying to avoid losing its opening SEC series at home.
It didn’t happen, not by a long shot. Georgia (8-7, 2-1 ) dominated from the outset, scoring four runs in the first inning and increasing its lead to 9-0 after four innings. Gordon Beckham went 4 for 5 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI for Georgia, which outhit the Razorbacks 10-3. Arkansas made all three errors in the game, including two by the usually reliable Logan Forsythe at third base. Georgia starter Nathan Moreau (1-0 ) allowed 1 run in 6 innings and tied a career high with 8 strikeouts. “That hasn’t happened a lot in our history, when you lose on Friday night and win the series on the road,” Georgia Coach David Perno said. “I’m real proud of our kids, and I think we may have turned the corner by playing the tough schedule we’ve played. “ We’ve been pushed every weekend, and we’ve learned a lot.” Georgia entered the series with a. 500 record after facing nationally-ranked opponents like Arizona, Florida State and defending national champion Oregon State. Arkansas also will face some tough competition as it tries to regroup after losing four of its past five games. The Razorbacks play nonconference games Tuesday and Wednesday at Nebraska, which should be energized by the return of Van Horn, who coached the Cornhuskers for five seasons before taking the to score Scott Lyons, who led off with a walk. Freshman James Mahler 1 lasted 3 / 3 innings in his first SEC start, and a string of relievers for Arkansas didn’t fare much better. Mahler (1-1 ) walked four in the first inning, when the Bulldogs scored four runs on one infield hit by Michael Demperio. Beckham hit a home run ff Mahler in the second before the Bulldogs added five runs in the fourth to lead 8-0. Arkansas pulled within 10-2 before Beckham punctuated Georgia’s victory with his second home run of the game in the ninth. “I hope we learn a lot from these last 14 or 15 innings,” Van Horn said. “We didn’t handle the [Saturday ] loss very well and got it handed to us.” Arkansas job in 2003. Arkansas then plays consecutive SEC series at LSU and Vanderbilt, with two games at home against Centenary mixed in between. “It’s a quick turnaround, and we’re leaving out of here at 9 a. m. for Lincoln,” Van Horn said. “We’ve got a tough road ahead with the schedule we put together.
