COLLEGE BASEBALL : Hogs lose twice, go home wet, winless

Published: Monday, March 31, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Arkansas spent a long and dreary weekend in Nashville on a trip the Razorbacks hope soon to forget.

After battling the rain for two days, Arkansas completed two games against Vanderbilt on Sunday and lost both of them. Vanderbilt defeated Arkansas 6-5 in 12 innings in the completion of a suspended game from Saturday then beat the Razorbacks 6-2 in a seveninning game that followed.

The two victories for Vanderbilt (18-6, 5-3 ) ended a streak of 11 consecutive series defeats to the Razorbacks dating back to 1994. The teams split four games last season with Vanderbilt beating Arkansas 7-4 in the SEC Tournament championship game at Hoover, Ala.

“It’s been a kind of nemesis Vanderbilt has had in being unable to beat [Arkansas ],” Vanderbilt Coach Tim Corbin said. “They’ve had some good teams, and they keep coming after you. You never feel like you have them down.”

Arkansas (15-11, 2-6 ) had its chances, but the Razorbacks stranded 13 runners and left the bases loaded three times in the seven-inning game. Their struggles to get a key hit started in the first inning with the Razorbacks loaded the bases with no outs and failed to score.

Arkansas also left the bases loaded in the third and sixth innings while outhitting the Commodores 7-6.

“We get off to a good start in the first inning by loading the bases then, just like that, we don’t drive anybody in,” Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn said. “We gave all the momentum to the guys in the other dugout at that point and that’s disappointing. It was a hard day.”

Aaron Westlake went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI to lead Vanderbilt. Tim Smalling hit a home run and Andy Wilkins an RBI double for the Razorbacks, who’ve lost 10 of 14 after an 11-1 start.

The teams combined to use 11 pitchers in the seven-inning game with Kendall Korbal (0-4 ) taking the loss for Arkansas and Caleb Cotham getting the victory for the Commodores.

Arkansas threatened at the outset when Sean Jones led off with a single, Chase Leavitt reached on a fielding error, and Logan Forsythe walked. But Taylor Hill recovered by getting Wilkins on a popup then striking out Brett Eibner and Jacob House to end the inning. House went down swinging after barely missing an extra-base hit that landed just foul down the leftfield line.

Arkansas loaded the bases again in the third inning but failed to score when Caleb Cotham struck out House to retire the side.

Vanderbilt took advantage of its opportunities with four runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Westlake had the big hit with a two-out, two-run RBI single off Mike Bolsinger after an intentional walk to Ryan Flaherty.

Vanderbilt beat Arkansas 6-5 in 12 innings earlier in a continuation of a game that was suspended from Saturday because of an SEC curfew rule. The game resumed at noon after a ninehour day that included a nearly five-hour rain delay. The teams were rained out Friday night after waiting two hours for rain to clear.

Brian Harris won it for Vanderbilt with a two-out RBI double to score Parker Hanks.

Taylor Hill struck out the side in the top of the 12 th before Hanks got it started for Vanderbilt with a one-out single off Stephen Richards. Richards struck out Shea Robin for the second out, but Harris lifted a long fly to left field that eluded a leaping Casey Coon and hit off the wall. Hanks was running on the play and scored standing up from first base ahead of the relay throw from shortstop Tim Smalling.

“I’ve been here six years, and I’ve never had a weekend like this,” Corbin said. “You’re trying to get into some type of flow, but you can’t. You think you’re going to play, you’re not going to play, then you’re out for five hours, and you eat and feel like a slob.”

Alex Feinberg was 5 for 6 with 3 RBI in the suspended game to lead Vanderbilt. Ben Tschepikow and Sean Jones each had two hits for Arkansas and Justin Wells was solid in relief with seven strikeouts in six innings. UALR 15, MIDDLE TENNESSEE 8

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — After dropping the first two games of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with Middle Tennessee, UALR (5-19, 2-8 ) bounced back Sunday.

Senior Robert Taylor went 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and a career-high 6 RBI to help the Trojans avoid a sweep at the hands of the Blue Raiders (12-10-1, 5-6 ).

Senior Levi Laughlin (3-1 ) got the victory, allowing 11 hits and 7 runs in 8 innings, striking out 7 and walking 1.

Taylor and junior Eric Hanlon provided Laughlin with all the run support he would need, as the duo drove in a combined 10 runs. Taylor hit a three-run home run in the first and added a two-run shot in the sixth. Hanlon went 2 for 3 with 4 RBI, and belted his first home run of the year — a two-run shot in the eighth. Senior Nick DeSanctis and junior Matt Apfel tied for the team lead with four hits apiece, with DeSanctis hitting his first home run of the year in the fifth inning. Prior to Sunday’s series finale, the two teams completed Saturday’s postponed game, with the Blue Raiders picking up a 34-8 victory. Bishop Rawley led Middle Tennessee, accounting for 11 total runs, with 5 runs scored and 6 RBI. The Blue Raiders hit seven home runs in the victory, including two by Rawley. UALR returns to action Tuesday afternoon when it welcomes Mississippi Valley State to Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock at 2 p. m. After that, the Trojans will head to Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock for an exhibition game with the Arkansas Travelers at 7 p. m. SOUTH ALABAMA 8, ARKANSAS STATE 7

MOBILE, Ala. — Down 8-4 going into the eighth inning, the Arkansas State Indians rallied to cut the four-run South Alabama lead to a single run, but the Jaguars held on for a Sun Belt Conference victory Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field. With the victory, South Alabama (16-11, 5-4 ) earned the series sweep over the Indians (14-13, 5-7 ), the first sweep suffered by ASU since it dropped three in a row to Troy in April 2007. Arkansas State cut the 8-4 South Alabama lead in half in the eighth when senior Ryan Hudgins hit a two-run home run over the left-field wall to pull the Indians within two runs. The Indians got the tying run to the plate later in the inning when freshman Drew Benes followed Hudgins’ home run with a single to right field, but junior Guy Brown grounded into a double play to end the threat.

The Indians scored again in the ninth when junior Lawson Hipps reached and advanced to third on an error to lead off the inning. Hipps crossed the plate on a single down the left-field line from freshman designated hitter Murray Watts to make it 8-7. Junior closer Greg Johnson retired the next two batters before junior fielder Derrick Coleman reached base with a single, but senior A. J. Prickel, running for Watts, got caught in a rundown on the play to end the game.

Coleman had two hits, including a tworun home run in the fourth that gave Arkansas State a 4-2 lead. LAMAR 7, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 4

BEAUMONT, Texas — Lamar (18-8, 8-1 Southland Conference ) led 4-0 after three innings and 7-1 after five, completing the three-game sweep of Central Arkansas (12-15, 2-7 ) at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Sunday.

Lamar scored its four runs in the third on three hits and an error. UCA cut the score to 4-1 in the fifth when sophomore Graham Martin led off with a walk and was driven in by a double to right-center by sophomore Tye Throneberry.

Travis Dunson hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth and Steven Tucker add a two-run double in the sixth to push the Cardinals’ lead to 7-1.

Senior Kevin Rawls knocked in two runs with a double in the top of the eighth for the Bears. Senior Chris Houk also hit an RBI double in the top of the ninth for the final run of the game.

Houk finished 3 for 5 with 2 doubles. Throneberry went 2 for 3 and walked twice.

Winning pitcher Tim Erickson (3-0 ), who saved Friday’s game, struck out 5 and allowed 4 hits, 1 run and 2 walks in 7 innings. UCA senior Brandon Dunn (1-2 ) suffered the loss by allowing 7 hits and 3 earned runs, striking out 1 in 4 2 / 3 innings. Razorbacks at a glance UP NEXT Missouri State WHEN Tuesday, 7 p. m.
