Richardson to join college hall of fame

Published: Monday, April 07, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

FAYETTEVILLE - Nolan Richardson, who was 389-© in 17 seasons as Arkansas' coach from 1985-2002, including winning the 1994 NCAA championship, is among seven inductees to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame's 2008 class announced Sunday.

"It's a great honor," said Richardson, who lives on his ranch outside Fayetteville. "It makes me feel I've had a pretty good career with some great people around me. Great coaches, great players.

" It's a tribute not only to myself, but the people who have helped me get to where I am."

Richardson, 67, is the only coach to win a junior college national championship along with NIT and NCAA Tournament titles. He won the NJCAA title at Western Texas in 1980 and the NIT title at Tulsa in 1981.

In 22 seasons as an NCAA Division I coach, his Tulsa and Arkansas teams were a combined 508-206 with 16 NCAA Tournament appearances and four NIT appearances.

Richardson coached the Razorbacks to three NCAA Tournament Final Fours in 1990, 1994 and 1995.

Joining Richardson in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame's 2008 class are Danny Manning, who led Kansas to the 1988 NCAA title; Arnie Ferrin, the Final Four MVP as a freshman with Utah in 1944 and a four-time All-American; former Auburn star Charles Barkley; TV analysts Dick Vitale and Billy Packer; and Jim Phelan, who was 830 games over 49 seasons as Mount St. Mary's coach.

A formal induction ceremony will be held Nov. 23 at the Hall of Fame, which is located at the College Basketball Experience connected to the Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City, Mo.

The College Basketball Experience and Hall of Fame is a 41, 500-square foot facility that opened in 2007 and is owned and operated by the National Association of Basketball Coaches Foundation.

In 2006, the NABC inducted a founding class for its Hall of Honor, including 175 individuals who are members of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Richardson, who played for Don Haskins at Texas Western (now Texas-El Paso ), is part of the third class to be inducted to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
