THE RECRUITING GUY : Lineman inspecting Arkansas online Published: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL Schools around the country are using their spring football games to try to impress visiting high school prospects with what they have to offer. Arkansas is no different as it plans to host numerous athletes on unofficial visits for their Red-White spring game this weekend. New Orleans offensive lineman Joey Fontana of Brother Martin High School will be one of those in attendance to check out the Razorbacks. Arkansas, Kentucky and Louisiana Tech have offered him scholarships. He visited Kentucky over the weekend and plans to visit Vanderbilt today before heading home. He has also visited LSU, Ole Miss and Alabama. Fontana, 6-4, 280 pounds, 5. 01 seconds in the 40-yard dash, is a threeyear starter for Brother Martin and was a first-team all-district selection last year. Fontana said he e-mails defensive coordinator Willy Robinson on a regular basis.
"He knows I'm coming up," Fontana said. "I usually call or e-mail all the coaches once a week. He asked me to check out the facilities online and I saw them and they look pretty awesome. The indoor facility and the weight room just look unbelievable." Fontana said he has never been in Arkansas and has limited knowledge about the university. "Before I talked to Coach Robinson and they had offered me, the only thing I knew about them was they played LSU for the Boot trophy every year," said Fontana, who reports a 350-pound bench press, 490 squat and a 300 power clean. "Now that I've got a chance to sit down and look at pictures of the area, it looks like a pretty awesome place. I've actually never been to anywhere in Arkansas but I've been in the Memphis area." He said he and his father are avid outdoorsmen and may try and take advantage of Arkansas' many natural settings. "My dad got all excited. He was like, 'I'm going to come up there and go camping,'" Fontana said. "He and I like to camp a lot. We backpack and we love the mountains. Especially him, he loves going up in the mountains. You name a mountain range in the U. S. and my dad has probably dragged me there in some point in my life." Fontana said Arkansas is recruiting him as a guard or center. College coaches are be able visit high schools during the spring evaluation period that runs until May 31 to check out prospects. Fontana hopes to make a decision soon afterward. "I'm hoping to make my decision before the first week of the summer," Fontana said. "I still want to see who comes this spring to see me. I'm definitely not going to wait until midway during the season." Circumstancial stance Power forward DeMarcus Cousins, 6-10, 250, of Mobile (Ala. ) LeFlore was in Fayetteville over the weekend playing for the Birmingham Storm in the Real Deal on the Hill AAU tournament. He's considered one of the top prospects in the 2009 class and is orally committed to Alabama-Birmingham. Cousins said Washington, Arkansas, Alabama, Wake Forest and a host of other schools are still recruiting him and hope to change his mind. "It's a possibility," said Cousins, who was making his second appearance in the tournament. "I'm committed to Mike Davis, not the school. There's some circumstances that might lead me to not playing there." Cousins' teammate, shooting guard Nick Williams, made an official visit to Arkansas over the weekend but signed Monday with Indiana. Embracing his roots Arkansas, Texas and Baylor are the top three schools for shooting guard 1 Shawn Williams 6-6 / 2, 190, of Desoto, Texas. Williams, who's originally from Pine Bluff, participated in the Real Deal on the Hill with his team, Texas Select, which is coached by his father, Shawn Williams Sr. Williams Sr. said he was glad to see his son embrace his roots. "It's a good feeling. Being back home in Arkansas is always good," Williams Sr. said. "For him to accept his home state regardless of where he's at, it always feels good." Williams Sr. 's father and mother, Leroy and Katherine Williams of Little Rock, made the trip to Fayetteville along with an aunt and uncle to watch the younger Williams play. "They brought their RV down," Williams said. "My aunt and uncle came as well. I think my uncle has season tickets for the Razorbacks." Williams Jr. said Bud Walton Arena has no equal as far as he's concerned. "This is like my third time playing here," said Williams, whose rated No. 33 in the nation for the 2009 recruiting class by Bob Gibbons of ESPN. com. "It's nice, I've been to other colleges and there's nothing like this right here." Oh Henry Arkansas signed shooting guard / small forward Jason Henry of Cincinnati Harmony Community prep school late last week. Harmony Community assistant coach Derryck Van Cobb said Henry is one of the more athletically gifted players he's coached. "He's probably one of the best ones I've ever coached and I've been coaching for like 15 years," Van Cobb said. "With Jason on our team for two years, we lost one game and that was our last game we played this year." Van Cobb said Henry has a nice all-around game along with a competitive streak. "He's just like a flat-out scorer," he said. "He can shoot, he can score off the dribble, he can defend and he's a leader out there. He hates to lose. He's very competitive in practice and in the games." Henry averaged about 22 points, 6. 5 rebounds and 2 steals for Harmony Community this past season.
