RED-WHITE GAME : Arkansas piles up numbers Published: Sunday, April 27, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE - Record numbers of Arkansas football fans had to be feasting their eyes on the proceedings at Razorback Stadium on Saturday. The final offensive statistics - including 601 yards of total offense by the Red team - were not misprints in the Red's 45-14 victory over the White team in the annual spring scrimmage. A Red-White game record crowd estimated at 40, 200 attended the final spring workout in the debut of Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino and saw solid evidence of the flashy offense promised under Petrino. "It was just great to see the crowd here tonight and the excitement, not just tonight, but all day long," Petrino said. "It was a great day for Arkansas. No question we got a lot out of this." A lot of offen se, to be sure.
Casey Dick completed 33 of 49 passes for 404 yards and 1 touchdown to spark the offensive eruption for the Red team, which was composed of essentially first-teamers on both sides of the ball. "You try to get the ball to your playmakers as much as possible, and everybody did a great job," Dick said. "In this offense, you just learn to make plays." The combined total offense figure of 735 yards for both teams was made even more impressive because a running clock was used in the second half. Footballs were in the air in numbers not seen in Fayetteville in about a decade, but the Razorbacks also looked tough on the ground. Michael Smith rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown in the first half and finished with 220 all-purpose yards that included a weaving, across-the-field 55-yard sprint with a screen pass to set up a second-half score. "It's great to see his speed show up and the explosiveness that he can have," Petrino said. "I've just got to learn how to use him right, make sure that we throw him the ball enough and get him in the open field." Smith has battled through ailments, like a hip pointer and hernia, this spring. "You've got a guy with a hernia coming out and running full speed and just busting it," receiver London Crawford said of Smith's showing. Brandon Barnett scored four touchdowns, three for the Red in the second half, and finished with 89 rushing yards. "I thought Michael and Brandon Barnett played well," running backs Coach Tim Horton said. "[Smith's ] blocking was very good. He made things happen with the ball. The good thing is we had backs making yards for themselves." Three players had at least seven catches, led by D. J. Williams, who had 9 grabs for 80 yards and 1 touchdown. Crawford caught 8 passes for 82 yards and 1 score, while Carlton Salters had a game-high 108 yards on 7 receptions. Williams' Red-White performance carried on his monster spring. "I think D. J. can be as good a tight end as there is in the country," offensive coordinator Paul Petrino said. Dick threw for 244 yards in the first half alone and completed 67 percent of his throws on the night. He had a couple of errors in the scoring zone, however, including a throw into triple coverage that was tipped and picked off by linebacker Aaron Fenton. The Red defense held their second-team counterparts to 134 total yards, but the White scored twice in the second quarter to pull within 21-14. Alex Tejada kicked a 30-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to make it 24-14. The White's top playmaker was Rod Coleman, who caught an underthrown 50-yard pass from Nathan Dick to set up a 3-yard Taylor Huskisson touchdown run. Coleman also took a 26-yard reverse into Red territory to set up the White's second score, a 16-yard bounce around left end by Barnett. Generosity appeared to be extended to the offense on three of the first-half scoring drives. Crawford might have gotten away with a light push-off against cornerback Ramon Broadway on his 4-yard scoring grab. Dick appeared to have crossed the line of scrimmage - or at least gone right to the very brink of the spot - on his 11-yard scoring throw to D. J. Williams, and a penalty flag was picked up on a pass play that went for 13 yards to Williams on the drive that ended on Tejada's field goal at the end of the half. All in all, however, Petrino gave a thumbs-up to his club's spring performance. "We've made some big strides," he said. "We certainly have a long way to go. We've got a lot of new faces in there. I feel good about our front on both sides, offense and defense."
