Broyles to be inducted into AD hall of fame

Published: Wednesday, May 14, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

FAYETTEVILLE — Make it nine sports halls of fame for Frank Broyles.

Broyles, who retired as Arkansas’ athletic director in January after 50 years as being the Razorbacks’ football coach or athletic director, is among eight inductees for the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Broyles, 83, is joined in the 2008 induction class by Jake Crouthamel, Syracuse; Joe Etzel, Portland; Christine Grant, Iowa; Willis Ham, South Carolina State; Ted Leland, Stanford; William Moore, Central Connecticut State; and Ron Warnock, De Anza College.

The inductees will be honored on June 10 at a luncheon at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas.

Broyles previously has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame; state halls of fame for Arkansas and his native Georgia; the Cotton, Orange and Gator Bowl Halls of Fame; the UA Hall of Honor; and the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame.

“In his more than 50 years of service to the University of Arkansas and intercollegiate athletics, his vision and leadership allowed the Razorback program to flourish and in turn enrich the lives of thousands of student-athletes,” Jeff Long, who replaced Broyles as Arkansas’ athletic director, said in a statement. “Coach Broyles remains an important part of Razorback athletics, the University and the state and I am personally grateful for his support.

“ We are extremely proud that Coach Broyles is being recognized for his outstanding contributions and his legendary career.” Broyles was Arkansas’ athletic director from 1973-2007 and oversaw a program that won 43 national titles (42 in cross country and track and field, one in basketball ), won 57 championships in the Southwest Conference and 48 SEC championships, and played in 22 bowl games.

Since 1996, the Broyles Award has been given to the outstanding college football assistant coach.

Broyles now works as a consultant for the Razorback Foundation, the university’s private, athletic fundraising arm.
