Arkansas' run ends in quarters Published: Sunday, May 18, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL TULSA - Arkansas' surprising postseason run came to an end Saturday as No. 7 UCLA defeated the No. 17 Lady Razorbacks 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. UCLA advanced to the Final Four for the second consecutive season. "This was a big match for our team," UCLA Coach Stella Sampras Webster said. "We definitely felt like we were expected to win.... Arkansas is a very strong team, and they have had an incredible tournament." UCLA won the doubles point, and the Lady Razorbacks (18-10 ) never seemed to recover. No. 56 Stephanie Wetmore and Elizabeth Lumpkin defeated Maryori Franco 8-3, and No. 1 Riza Zalameda and Tracy Lin slipped past No. 23 Aurelija Miseviciute and Ea Kaluder 8-4. "The biggest difference today was we lost the doubles point," Arkansas Coach Michael Hegarty said. "It has been such a boost for us all season, and it really knocked us back a bit today."
Arkansas needed some early energy in singles play as it tried to advance to the program's first Final Four appearance, but the Bruins (22-5 ) wouldn't let up and used three straight-set victories to clinch a spot in the semifinals. Tracy Lin, ranked No. 30 in singles, defeated Kaluder 6-2, 6-2 to give UCLA a 2-0 lead. No. 42 Yasmin Schnack followed suit by defeating Anouk Tig u 6-2, 6-1, setting up for No. 54 Andrea Remynse's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Airapetian that clinched the match. "We almost swayed the momentum in our favor early in singles, but just could not cut that corner to give us the upper hand," Hegarty said. Miseviciute and Kaluder'seasons will continue Wednesday at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. Miseviciute will compete in singles, while she and Kaluder will team up in doubles competition. "I am real proud of all the accomplishments this team achieved this season," Hegarty said. "We have had great senior leadership, fantastic play by our freshmen, and the heart and soul of our team is the junior class, combining for a great mix."
