ANDREWS, Scotland — Former Arkansas Lady Razorback Stacy Lewis and her teammates paced the United States to a 4-2 lead after the first day of the Curtis Cup on Friday. Lewis paired with Alison Walshe of Westford, Mass., in one of the morning foursomes playing alternate shot. They were 3-down to Elizabeth Bennett of England and Jodi Ewart of Scotland after five holes but rallied for a 3-and-1 victory. The Americans won the next two holes, opened the back nine by winning two consecutive holes to take the lead, then closed it out by winning the 16 th and 17 th. Lewis teamed with Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst, winning the United States’ final point of the day with a 3-and-1 victory over Bennett and Florentyna Parker in the afternoon’s fourball matches. Blumenherst and Tiffany Joh of UCLA picked up a 1-up victory in the morning as well, beating Breanne Loucks of Wales and Florentyna Parker of England.
“I did have very high expectations for both of them going into this, so I’m not at all surprised that they played well,” U. S. captain Carol Semple Thompson said. “They [Lewis and Blumenherst ] teamed well together this afternoon to come back from 3-down.” Kimberly Kim of Hawaii and Mina Harigae of Monterey beat Carly Booth of Scotland and Michele Thomson of Scotland 3 and 2 Sally Watson of Scotland won both her matches. Today’s play again features three foursomes and three four-ball matches. All eight players for both teams move on to singles play Sunday. The United States is a four-time winner of the biannual Curtis Cup.
