THE RECRUITING GUY : Okie from Muskogee gets attention from UA coaches

Published: Friday, June 13, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

It didn’t take long for one Oklahoma defensive lineman to grab the attention of Arkansas’ coaching staff at the Bobby Petrino Football Camp earlier this week.

Muskogee’s Robert Thomas, 6-1, 290, 4. 89 seconds in the 40-yard dash, performed well during 1-on-1 drills and caught the attention of Arkansas’ coaches, who no doubt will keep tabs on him.

Thomas said he liked how he was treated by coaches and current players.

“The coaching staff and the players seem to be real downto-earth people, and I liked that a lot,” said Thomas, who plans to major in engineering.

Arkansas reportedly is considering extending an offer to Thomas, who reportedly can do 11 or 12 reps of 375 pounds on the bench press and squats 650 pounds. He has scholarship offers from Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Wyoming. Others showing interest include Oklahoma, Purdue, Kansas, Florida and Missouri.

Thomas also has attended Oklahoma’s camp and plans to make camps at Kansas State and Notre Dame.

Arkansas’ weight room and Fayetteville impressed Thomas.

“I’ve never seen a weight room like that,” Thomas said. “I like the town itself. It’s like laid-back, and I’m a laidback person, so that was cool. They’re definitely in my top five.”

Thomas also met Coach Bobby Petrino, who talked to him about attending Arkansas’ senior camp.

“He wants me there July 19,” said Thomas, who has recorded a 4. 52 pro-shuttle time. “He said he wanted to spend some time with me.”

Thomas, who saw limited time last season because of a deep thigh bruise, said he might make a commitment during his season.

“I’m going to weigh out my options and see what I can get,” Thomas said “I’ll probably commit before my season is over.” TOP CORNERBACK VISITS UA

One of the nation’s top cornerbacks made an unofficial visit Monday to check out the Razorbacks.

Gabe Lynn, 6-0, 180, 4. 47, of Tulsa Jenks didn’t work out at the camp but took a tour of the campus with his father.

“I got to see the facilities. It was a pretty good trip,” said Lynn, who has more than 40 offers, including one from the Hogs. “I like the weight room and how it’s 100 yards long, and the stadium was a real nice. I heard that they play two games in Little Rock and play the other games in the new stadium. That’s pretty awesome.”

Razorbacks strength and conditioning coach Jason Veltkamp impressed Lynn and his father.

“We liked his philosophy,” Lynn said. “He seems like one of the best coaches I’ve met as far as weight and conditioning from all of the universities.”

Lynn previously visited Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Nebraska.

“Arkansas is a great school, and they have great coaches,” said Lynn, who had 52 tackles and five interceptions last year. “I kind of put them in with Oklahoma because their programs are already at the top and they have the players to win a national championship. I kind of compare Arkansas to Nebraska because it’s the only major university in Arkansas. All of the money goes into that one school.”

Arkansas secondary coach Lorenz Ward also impressed the Lynns

Arka nsas quarterbacks coach Garrick McGee, who starred at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, is in charge of recruiting Oklahoma, and Lynn is very aware of Mc-Gee’s roots.

“He knows a lot about what’s going on down here,” Lynn said. “He’s real popular down here. It’s nice talking to someone from Tulsa.”

Lynn said he plans to visit LSU on July 21 but doubts he’ll attend Arkansas’ senior camp July 19. He hopes to make his college choice before his season starts.

UDOH CHOOSES BAYLOR Former Michigan center Ekpe Udoh, who made an official visit to Arkansas on June 1-3, will transfer to Baylor. Udoh, 6-10, 240, attended high school at Edmond, Okla.. He also considered transferring to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. E-mail Richard Davenport at rdavenpor t@arkansasonline. com
