RECRUITING : Petrino, staff going after Texas talent

Published: Sunday, June 29, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino has made it a point to place special emphasis on in-state talent, but he also intends to make the Razorbacks a force in Texas.

It’s no coincidence that of Arkansas’ five oral commitments for the Class of 2009, two are from Texas. Arkansas also has secured an oral commitment for 2010 from Texas — Pilot Point offensive lineman Cam Feldt, 6-4, 285, 5. 3 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Frisco Wakeland quarterback Will Secord, 6-2, 204, 4. 66, has orally committed to the Razorbacks. Secord is expected to be among the top quarterbacks in Texas this fall after completing 147 of 248 passes for 2, 019 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior.

The other Texan who has said yes to Arkansas is Caddo Mills defensive end Ryan Calender, 6-8, 220, 4. 8. Calender had 85 tackles and 20 sacks as a junior. He played outside linebacker, defensive end, quarterback and tight end.

Arkansas is hoping to add Rockwall Heath linebacker Austin Moss, 6-3, 208, 4. 67, to its list of commitments this summer. Moss’ father, Mickey, is the former head coach at Hamburg High School, and Moss has several relatives who live in Arkansas. Moss attended a spring practice at Arkansas and recently took another unofficial visit to Fayetteville. He has 17 scholarship offers, but Arkansas might be the team to beat.

“My recruiting is going well,” Moss said. “I completed spring football and then took some visits. I think we will be really strong this fall.”

Moss is familiar with Arkansas and feels that if he chooses the Razorbacks it will be a good fit.

“Arkansas is a real good area,” Moss said. “The town is nice, the facilities are nice, and the coaches are all really cool. I really enjoy talking to Coach [Mike ] Summers.”

Summers is the offensive line coach for Petrino and recruits part of Texas. Moss said Summers is a good recruiter and is easy to talk to as well.

“I’m looking at the coaches at the schools and how they stand out in the community,” Moss said. “I want to go to a good conference, one where I will be challenged by the best players. I’m looking at the facilities and academics, but most schools have good facilities and academics. I want to go where I can play early.

“ Arkansas has told me I could play inside or outside linebacker.”

Arkansas is also in pursuit of Waco Reicher athlete Ross Rasner, 6-0 180, 4. 5. Rasner attended the Junior Day at Arkansas and watched the Red-White game. He is a versatile athlete who could end up at safety or outside linebacker. SMU and Baylor are among the competition for Rasner.

Arkansas is still in pursuit of three linemen from Maud, located in East Texas, but that group is committed to TCU and it’s uncertain if Arkansas or any other school can pry the group away from the Horned Frogs.

Maud’s group consists of twoway lineman James Dunbar, 6-6, 290, 4. 79, defensive end Bryant House, 6-4, 265, 4. 9, and defensive tackle Ray Burns, 6-1, 290, 4. 8. A source close to the three players said they would like to attend the same college, and he expects they will end up in Fort Worth.

Dallas Adamson linebacker Roderick Goodlow, 6-2, 200, 4. 5, is considering Arkansas among his several offers. Goodlow had a good junior season with 109 tackles and 4 interceptions on defense to go with 18 catches for 224 yards and 1 touchdown on offense. Several Big 12 schools have offered Goodlow.

Arkansas has two players from Dallas Carter on its roster, cornerback Isaac Madison and offensive guard DeMarcus Love, and is hoping to pull defensive lineman Chris Henderson, 6-1, 249, 4. 85, away from Texas A&M.

Henderson gave an early oral pledge to the Aggies but has indicated he might open up his recruiting again. If so, Arkansas is among the schools he has said he will consider.
