THE RECRUITING GUY : Pulaski Academy receiver gives Hogs another look Published: Tuesday, September 02, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL Approximately 35 prospects took unofficial visits to Arkansas on Saturday for the Razorbacks’ game against Western Illinois, including Pulaski Academy receiver Neal Barlow, who has orally committed to Kansas. “I’m just trying to gain as much additional information on each school as I can to make sure I make the right decision,” Barlow said. “I want to make sure everything is what I expected and be sure that I couldn’t go back and have any regrets that I made the most informed decision that I could.” Barlow, 6-6, 190 pounds, 4. 55 seconds in the 40-yard dash, said he enjoyed the atmosphere and seeing seven to eight receivers getting receptions for Arkansas. He said he was surprised by the number of freshmen who saw action. “I’ve been hearing that a lot of them would play, but I was kind of surprised how many actually did play,” Barlow said. “There were 10 to 12 of them playing the majority of the time. That was pretty surprising. It just shows if you come in and work hard, they don’t care how old you are and you’re going to play.” Barlow said he had a meeting with Coach Bobby Petrino on Sunday morning and that it “went real well.” Barlow plans to travel to Lawrence, Kan., this weekend for Kansas’ game with Louisiana Tech, and he doesn’t know when he’ll make a final decision. “I’m really not sure,” he said. “I’ll probably just play it by ear when the time comes.”
CALENDAR IMPRESSED Arkansas commitment Ryan Calendar, 6-8, 235, 4. 9, of Caddo Mills, Texas, also took in Saturday’s game and was impressed with the atmosphere at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. “I’ve never heard 80, 000 fans cheering at one time,” he said. “I liked how on fourth down they all were screaming their heads off. I can’t wait to be a Hog myself and be out there playing.” Calendar, who will play defensive end for the Hogs, started his season off well Friday night with 6 catches for 62 yards and 1 touchdown from his tight end position. He also returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a score. He and his parents traveled to Fayetteville in May for an unofficial visit, and shortly afterward, Calendar orally committed to the Hogs. “My dad thought the trip [Saturday ] was great, and Mom said she really liked how everyone was so friendly at the game and how they were real supportive of the players.” Calendar said. Before leaving Fayetteville for the five-hour trip back to Caddo Mills, the Calendars loaded up with more than $ 150 worth of Razorbacks merchandise. All three plan to be back for another game when Calendar makes his official visit. BASKETBALL UPDATE Arkansas’ men’s basketball team entertained four prospects on unofficial visits Saturday, two of whom are part of the talented 2011 class in Arkansas. Little Rock Parkview forward Aaron Ross, 6-7, 205, and East Poinsett County guard Ky Madden, 6-4, 170, visited with the coaches and took in the football game. Ross orally committed to the Hogs in March, and Madden holds offers from Arkansas, Kentucky, Baylor, West Virginia and Ole Miss. Conway guard Kenyon Mc-Neil, a 6-1, 170-pound prospect for the 2010 class, also was on hand Saturday, as was Arkansas-Fort Smith sophomore small forward Jenniro Bush, 6-7, 180. McNeil is drawing interest from Arkansas, Ole Miss, Alabama-Birmingham, UALR and Central Arkansas. Bush has offers from LSU and Alabama and is receiving interest from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Mississippi State and others. WILLIAMS STILL SOLID Helena-West Helena running back / safety Turell Williams, who has orally committed to the Razorbacks, wanted to travel to Fayetteville for the game but didn’t have a ride, so he accompanied teammate Darius Winston to Oxford, Miss., for his visit during the Ole Miss-Memphis game. But Williams made it clear where he plans to play his college football. “I just wanted to go to a college football game,” Williams said. “I’m solid. I’m a Hog. They [Razorback fans ] have nothing to worry about. I’m a die-hard Razorback.” Williams, 6-2, 215, 4. 52, has the size Coach Bobby Petrino likes at running back but could see action at safety for Arkansas. NO UNOFFICIAL VISITS IN LR Arkansas will not host any recruits on unofficial visits this weekend for its game against Louisiana-Monroe at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. The game is technically a home game for the Warhawks. Arkansas and Louisiana-Monroe signed a 10-year agreement in 2004 that allows the Warhawks to designate five of the Little Rock games — 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012 — as home games. The contract benefits both schools for different reasons. The agreement allows Arkansas a long-term home series, and it helps Louisiana-Monroe by allowing it to count the attendance figures to help maintain the minimum average of 15, 000 that’s needed to remain a Division I-A member.
