Louisiana athlete chooses Arkansas Published: Wednesday, September 03, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL Arkansas gained another football commitment Tuesday when Louisiana athlete Ricky Johnson of Lafayette Carencro said he wanted to be a Razorback. Johnson 6-1, 190 pounds, 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash, had nine scholarship offers, including offers from Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Nebraska and Texas A&M. He and his parents traveled to Fayetteville on Saturday for the Western Illinois game on an unofficial visit. "When I went up there, I liked all of the facilities and I talked to all of the coaches and they seem real nice," Johnson said." [My parents] liked everything about it." In the past, Carencro has featured former LSU safety Damien James, Tennessee receiver Lucas Taylor and New England Patriots running back Kevin Faulk as option quarterbacks. Johnson, who rushed for more than 800 yards at quarterback last season, is being recruited as an athlete for the Hogs. Seeing fellow players from Louisiana such as safety Jerico Nelson and linebacker Jelani Smith playing helped seal the deal for Johnson.
"I also saw the freshmen playing that were from around here," Johnson said. "That really excited me." The Johnsons arrived home about 8 p.m. Tuesday. Johnson said he saw little damage from Hurricane Gustav as he and his family drove back to Lafayette Johnson is Arkansas' 12th commitment for the 2009 class. Oral commitments are nonbinding.
