THE RECRUITING GUY : Hogs, Cornhuskers in fight for junior college guard Published: Tuesday, September 30, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL Junior college guard Jemal Farmer will probably decide later this week whether he’ll be a Razorback or a Cornhusker. Farmer, 6-5, 213 pounds, of Cloud Community College in Kansas, made an official visit to Arkansas on Sept. 19-21 and to Nebraska this past weekend, and he said he’s torn between the two schools. “It’s really between those two,” said Farmer, who averaged 16. 1 points and 5. 4 rebounds per game last season. “Its pros and cons with both of them. It’s going to be a hard decision. You can’t really go wrong with either one of them. One second, I like Nebraska better, and another second, I like Arkansas better.” Farmer earned first-team all-conference honors in the Jayhawk Western Division. The week before his visit to Fayetteville, he visited Alabama-Birmingham, but Farmer said he’s eliminated the Blazers. “This week is going to be stressful for me,” Farmer said. “But I think it will be all right. I think wherever I go, if I choose Arkansas, I’m just going to ride with it and not look back, and it’s the same thing with Nebraska.” After his visit to Arkansas, Farmer said he felt very comfortable with the Razorbacks players and coaches. He said the visit to Lincoln was pretty much the same. Farmer talked about the positives for the Hogs.
“I love the conference, the SEC,” he said. “It has a lot of tradition, and Arkansas has it, too. I like Coach [John ] Pelphrey and Coach [Isaac ] Brown. I connected with the players.” Greenwood native and Nebraska Coach Doc Sadler’s background of coaching at Arkansas- Fort Smith for five years and his history of playing junior college players are pluses for the Huskers, according to Farmer. “Coach Sadler is a juco [junior college ] guy,” Farmer said. “He coached the jucos and traditionally his juco guys have played and started and been successful under his wing. That’s a big thing for me because I’m a juco guy.” Farmer said making the right decision is even more important since he’s a junior college player. ”There isn’t no transferring unless you transfer to a D-2 school, ” he said. “You have to make sure you make a good choice.” FOLLOWING FELDT Shortly after an outstanding performance at the Arkansas football camp in early June, Pilot Point, Texas, offensive lineman Cam Feldt received a scholarship offer from the Razorbacks and orally committed to Arkansas for 2010. Feldt, 6-4, 285, 5. 3 seconds in the 40-yard dash, has been inundated with mail despite his pledge to the Razorbacks. He said LSU, Oklahoma, Alabama, Iowa, UCLA Texas, Texas A&M and about 23 other schools have been filling his mailbox. The Bearcats are 3-1 so far this season and Feldt said he’s graded out in the 90-percent range and has accumulated about 20 pancake blocks. Feldt said Arkansas is keeping tabs on him. “[Assistant ] coach Tim Horton came by the school the day before the Texas game,” said Feldt, who reports a 365-pound bench press. “And I received a letter from [assistant ] coach [Mike ] Summers recently.” Feldt’s father, Blake, who’s the head coach at Pilot Point, served on the coaching staff at Appalachian State with Horton. Feldt admitted the Alabama and Texas games were painful. “It was tough to watch. It wasn’t a lot of fun.” He said. Feldt said he’s still solid in his commitment and he plans to attend the Florida game this weekend. HIGH ON THE HOGS Collegiate Baseball ranks Arkansas’ 2008 recruiting class of 11 high school and five junior college prospects as the No. 4 class in the country. The rankings, which were released last week, had nine SEC schools listed in the top 40 classes in the nation. Arizona State’s class was named the best followed by Oregon and Vanderbilt coming in at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Georgia, UCLA, Miami, Florida State, Clemson and Fresno State round out the top 10. Other SEC schools that made the rankings are South Carolina at No. 13, No. 18 Florida, No. 19 Kentucky, No. 20 LSU, No. 25 Ole Miss and No. 28 Tennessee.
