Razorbacks report

Love out for at least two weeks FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas cornerback Jamar Love had surgery Wednesday to insert two screws into his broken thumb and is projected to miss at least two weeks, Coach Bobby Petrino said.

Love was injured in the third quarter of last Saturday’s 38-7 loss to No. 12 Florida and returned in the fourth quarter. The senior team captain ranks second on the team with 31 tackles and leads the Hogs with seven pass breakups.

“They’re optimistic he could be back in two weeks,” Petrino said after Wednesday’s practice. “It all depends on how quickly the growth of the bone starts.” Petrino noted that the Arkansas medical staff has a bone stimulator on the area of the break.

“We’re optimistic he’ll be back in two weeks, [but ] we’re not sure yet,” Petrino said.

Earlier in the day, Petrino talked on the SEC teleconference about losing Love for a time period.

“It’s hard on him in particular because he’s put so much into it,” he said. “He did a lot of extra work in the summer. When other people had their breaks and left, he stayed and lifted weights and worked on his technique and quickness. So I feel bad for him.” Sophmore Ramon Broadway has moved into Love’s starting role opposite Isaac Madison. Broadway has registered 12 tackles, 1 interception and 1 breakup while playing in all five games.

“I’m excited about it. I’ve been waiting a long time to start,” Broadway said. “I feel like I’ve got to clean up some areas in my technique.

“ I’ve got a lot on my shoulders, but I think I can handle it.” Arkansas cornerbacks coach Lorenzo Ward said Broadway’s play has been “sporadic” this season.

“He’s done some good things; he’s done some things that aren’t so good,” Ward said. “We’ve just got to eliminate the things he’s doing that aren’t good and improve on the things he’s done well.” Ward said Broadway’s strengths include his work ethic and physical play.

“You know you’re going to get 100 percent effort all the time,” Ward said. “He’s a hardnosed kid.” Arkansas is now down two cornerbacks with the loss of Love and Jerell Norton, who is sidelined after aggravating a hamstring injury.

“It makes it tougher, because you’re a lot thinner in the secondary,” Ward said. “The guys have to get a lot more work in practice, so I have to be careful as a coach and make sure that they’re fresh enough going into the ballgame by rotating them.” The backup cornerbacks are senior Shedrick Johnson and true freshman Tramain Thomas. Hogs-Cats TV The Arkansas at Kentucky game on Oct. 18 has been picked up by ESPNU for a 6 p.m. Central broadcast, the SEC announced Wednesday. The game will mark Arkansas’ second national broadcast of the season, joining the game at Texas, which was shown on ABC. The Razorbacks’ first two conference games were aired on a regional basis by Raycom Sports. Saturday’s 4 p.m. game at Auburn is available on payper-view.

The real D. J. Sophomore tight end D. J. Williams has the edge in seniority on freshman tailback and kick returner Dennis Johnson, but he’s having to battle the youngster over a name.

Johnson, who also goes by D. J., is apparently trying to strike ownership of the initials. “He likes to call himself, ‘the real D. J.,’” Williams said. “He’s the second D. J.,” Johnson said, chuckling. So, what does Williams go by ? “D. J. No. 1, the real D. J.,” Johnson said. “We’re working on him getting it right,” Williams said.

Turnover trouble Arkansas has not won the turnover battle in any game this season and is coming off three consecutive games in which its opponent notched at least twice as many takeaways as the Razorbacks. The count for the season is 11 turnovers lost and three gained for a margin of minus-8 and an average of minus-1. 6 per game, which ranks 114 th in the nation and last in the SEC. The Hogs’ best showing in the turnover department was a 0-0 tie with Louisiana-Monroe in Week 2. Since then, they have lost the turnover count 4-1 against Alabama and 2-1 against both Texas and Florida. The Razorbacks have one takeaway in each of their past three games: an interception by Ramon Broadway against Alabama, a fumble return for a touchdown by Antwain Robinson against Texas, and Jerry Franklin’s interception off Florida’s Tim Tebow last week.

Reggie’s son Auburn redshirt freshman Adam Herring, the son of former Arkansas defensive coordinator Reggie Herring, is a reserve linebacker and has played in all six games, mostly on special teams. He has one tackle.

Herring played at Shiloh Christian High School in Springdale, then signed with Auburn, where he was born in 1989 when his father was a Tigers assistant coach.

Reggie Herring is now linebackers coach for the Dallas Cowboys, and Adam Herring said he’s glad he won’t be facing his father’s team when Auburn plays Arkansas on Saturday.

“You never want to go up against [your father ],” Adam Herring said. “We’re in the same family. We’re on the same side.” Reggie Herring was Arkansas’ defensive coordinator for three seasons from 2005-2007 and served as the Razorbacks’ interim head coach in last year’s 38-7 Cotton Bowl loss to Missouri.
