West Virginia athlete giving Razorbacks good look RECRUITING

Published: Sunday, October 26, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas’ recruiting class continues to take shape with new commitments coming in on a weekly basis.

The Razorbacks played host to four recruits for official visits this weekend and at least two more will be in Fayetteville for the Tulsa game. Huntington, W. Va., athlete Craig Crawford, 6-2, 196, 4. 48 seconds in the 40-yard dash, and Columbus (Ga. ) Carver linebacker LeRon Furr, 6-3, 225, 4. 65, will take their official visits to Arkansas next weekend. Both are being recruited by Arkansas’ Lorenzo Ward.

Crawford is rated the No. 1 player in West Virginia by Rivals. com, which also rates him a three-star athlete. Crawford and his teammates have suffered through a nightmarish season. On Friday night, the Highlanders fell to Ona Cabell Midland 36-0 to remain winless in nine games. Crawford will end his prep career Friday against Nitro before heading to Fayetteville to watch the Razorbacks and Tulsa.

“We have had some close losses and just couldn’t find a way to win at the end,” Crawford said. “They have me playing wide receiver and safety. I have been getting tackles and catching the ball.”

Before Friday’s game, Crawford had caught 25 passes for 290 yards and 1 touchdown with a long of 27 yards. Crawford also had 15 carries for 96 yards and 2 touchdowns. Earlier in the season, Huntington had him at quarterback where he completed 19 of 50 passes for 274 yards with 4 interceptions and 1 touchdown.

Crawford had 5 catches for 31 yards and 5 carries for 7 yards Friday

“Coach Ward told me he isn’t sure what position I will play if I go to Arkansas,” Crawford said. “I could play offense or defense. They might play me at safety or wide receiver.”

Crawford enjoyed a banner junior season in which he rushed 125 times for 584 yards and 5 touchdowns from his quarterback spot while completing 130 of 232 passes for 1, 618 yards and 11 touchdowns with 5 interceptions.

Crawford has scholarship offers from Arkansas, Marshall and Wake Forest. West Virginia hasn’t offered at this time, and it might be getting to the point where it won’t matter if it does.

“I’m really excited about my visit to Arkansas,” Crawford said. “That’s SEC, and I really like Arkansas.”

Furr, like Crawford, is rated a three-star recruit by Rivals. com. As a junior, Furr had 107 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and 1 fumble recovery. He’s having a good senior year, too.

“It’s going really good,” Furr said of his senior season. “Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Duke are three schools I will visit for sure. I will take all five visits.” Furr has been to Oklahoma State and will take in Duke at some point after the trip to Fayetteville. “I’m looking at the school, the coaches, the campus, the environment and the academics,” Furr said. “On the field, I can find the football and get to it. I will play inside linebacker in college.”

CANADIAN IMPRESSES Fork Union (Va. ) Military Academy linebacker Benjamin D’Aguliar, 6-3, 235, 4. 61, is on Arkansas’ campus this weekend. D’Aguliar, a native of Hamilton, Ontario, is being recruited to Arkansas by Lorenzo Ward as a middle linebacker or possibly a defensive end. Fork Union Coach John Shuman said Arkansas, Connecticut, Temple and Rutgers are recruiting D’Aguliar.

“We played his Canadian team last year, and I was really impressed,” Shuman said. “I brought him in for this one semester, and then he will go to Arkansas or some major college. The Canadian kids fly under the radar for the most part, but this kid can play.”

The Razorbacks have two scholarships the NCAA will allow them to count toward last year’s class since they enrolled only 23 players this fall. It appears if Arkansas has its way, the pair will be D’Aguliar and Hargrave (Va. ) Military Academy defensive end Leon Mackey, 6-6, 260, 5. 0. Mackey is rated a four-star recruit by Rivals. com.
