THE RECRUITING GUY : Junior college linebacker impressed with Arkansas Published: Tuesday, October 28, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL Among the 40 or so recruits attending the Arkansas-Ole Miss game Saturday was Coffeyville (Kan. ) Community College linebacker Paul Worrilow. He attended Concord High School in Wilimington, Del., and was named the state’s defensive player of the year in 2007. Worrilow, 6-2, 225 pounds, 4. 68 seconds in the 40-yard dash, made an official visit for the game and said Arkansas’s rabid support caught his attention. “The biggest thing that stuck out was how big of a football town it is,” said Worrilow, who reports a 330-pound bench press and a 540 squat. “Everybody is behind the Arkansas Razorbacks. During the game, the day before the game, pregame, all the tailgates, everything.” Worrilow was a full qualifier coming out of high school but wasn’t satisfied with his options and chose to attend Coffeyville, where he’s redshirting and will be able to enroll in a four-year college in December.
While he has no scholarship offers, Worrilow said he’s receiving interest from Boston College, Maryland and Louisville. Arkansas cornerbacks coach Lorenzo Ward, who’s the lead recruiter of Worrilow, and linebackers coach Reggie Johnson talked to him at the game. “They were selling the school and everything and the fact they’re so young and that in the upcoming years there’s a real bright future for the Razorbacks.” Worrilow said. Worrilow spoke to Coach Bobbby Petrino on Sunday morning before the taping of Petrino’s weekly television show. “He has my number and he told me he was going to call me this week so we can talk and he has a little more time.” he said. Redshirt linebacker Matt Marshall, who’s from Camden, N. J., hosted Worrilow for his weekend visit. “He’s great guy. He’s an East Coast guy, too,” Worrilow said. “We come from a lot of the same area. It was cool to hang out with him. He was telling me everything I saw, how dedicated they are and they are a family. You hear how people talk about being a family, but you can really see everybody is one family and they all have one goal.” OL COMPARES UA, OU Junior offensive lineman Garrett Gramling, 6-6, 305, 5. 5, of Denton (Texas ) Ryan, attended the Arkansas-Ole Miss game on an unofficial visit. Arkansas and Texas Tech have offered him scholarships, according to Gramling. He said Arkansas was the first to offer. Gramling has attended a game at Oklahoma and plans to travel to Lubbock, Texas, for the Texas Tech-Texas game Saturday. He came away impressed with his visit to Fayetteville. “I didn’t know what to expect going in to it,” said Gramling, who reports a 290-pound bench press and 405 squat. Gramling compared the atmosphere between Arkansas and Oklahoma. “There’s a lot of similarities because the fans are real passionate about the games,” Gramling said. “There’s real good football players playing and a bunch of tailgaters that gets there a couple of days before the game. I couldn’t tell many differences other than the Hog walk.” SOONER STATE PROSPECT Arkansas is actively recruiting Oklahoma this year and is also on some fine 2010 talent as well. Offensive lineman Bronson Irwin, 6-6, 305, 5. 2, of Mustang, Okla., also traveled to Fayetteville on Saturday. “I loved the atmosphere, the fans were great,” said Irwin, who reports a 320-pound bench press, 450 squat and a 4. 95-second proshuttle time. “It was a tough loss. That penalty [offensive pass interference on London Crawford ] was kind of iffy, but other than that, it was a good game.” Irwin reports an offer from Tulsa along with interest from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Clemson, Vanderbilt, Texas Tech and others. E-mail Richard Davenport at rdavenport@arkansasonline. com Razorbacks get pledge from Georgia fullback Fullback Jahron Brown, of East Paulding High School in Dallas, Ga., has orally committed to Arkansas. Brown’s father, James, said his son told Arkansas assistant coach Lorenzo Ward on Monday afternoon that he wanted to be a Razorback. “He thinks it’s a big opportunity for him,” James Brown said. “He thinks he can grow at the school and get an opportunity to play. He knows it’s an SEC school, and to him, the SEC is like the NFL.” Brown, 6-0, 225 pounds, 4. 7 seconds in the 40-yard dash, rushed 102 times for 987 yards and 17 touchdowns last year. He is the 20 th commitment for the 2009 class.
