EXHIBITION ARKANSAS 103, CAMPBELLSVILLE 58 : Old hands lead Hogs

Published: Tuesday, November 04, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas ’ newcomers have gotten a lot of attention, but it was the team’s old guys who led the Razorbacks to a 103-58 victory over Campbellsville (Ky. ) University on Monday night.

Juniors Michael Washington and Stefan Welsh, Arkansas’ most experienced players, combined to score 42 points as the Razorbacks won their exhibition opener at Walton Arena before an estimated 4, 500 fans.

Washington, a 6-9 forward who earlier Monday was announced as a member of the All-SEC second team voted on by the conference coaches, led the Razorbacks with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. He also took three charges.

Welsh, a 6-3 guard, had 20 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.

“They did what we needed them to do,” Arkansas Coach John Pelphrey said. “They both performed well, and that needs to continue.

“ They’ve led us very well to this point, and we’re going to challenge them to continue to do that.”

Washington is the Razorbacks’ main man inside with the losses of Darian Townes, Charles Thomas, Steven Hill and Vincent Hunter.

“I’m the veteran post player here now,” Washington said. “I have to step up.”

Washington hit 9 of 15 field goal attempts, including 1 of 2 three-pointers. He scored 10 points during a 37-9 first-half run for the Razorbacks that pushed them to a 40-16 lead after the Tigers had jumped ahead 7-3.

“For us, he’s impossible to guard because of his face-up ability and ability to shot the jumper all the way to the threepoint line,” Campbellsville Coach Keith Adkins said. “His length and athleticism is something we can’t match.”

Welsh, who hit 8 of 11 shots and 4 of 6 three-pointers, said he wasn’t surprised by how he and Washington played.

“That’s what’s expected of us now,” Welsh said. “We’re the only two players on this team that have significant experience playing in the SEC and in the NCAA Tournament.

“ We know coming in we’re the glue to this team, and the coaches have done a great job of bringing in nice pieces to fit around us.”

Freshman guard Rotnei Clarke scored 17 points, redshirt freshman forward Michael Sanchez had 13 points and five rebounds and freshman forward Jason Henry had 10 points and six rebounds.

“I was nervous,” Clarke said. “I could barely sleep last night.

“ This is a totally new thing for me, but once it got started, I calmed down a little bit and I was OK after that.”

Arkansas shot 60. 6 percent from the field (40 of 66 ), but fouled 24 times and had 17 turnovers while allowing 17 offensive rebounds.

Pelphrey said there were plenty of mistakes he can harp on in practice today, but overall he seemed pleased.

“I was a little surprised at the margin of victory to be honest with you,” he said.

“To get out there and play against another opponent, get some of those firsts out of the way for the first-year players, hopefully it’s something we can build on.”

Campbellsville came into the game ranked No. 18 in the NAIA preseason poll.

Last season the Razorbacks beat the Tigers 96-56 in an exhibition game.

“Considering all the players they lost from last year, I think Arkansas is closer to competing in the SEC West than a lot of people think,” Adkins said.

“I saw a pretty good team out there tonight, and it didn’t include Courtney Fortson.”

Fortson, a freshman expected to be Arkansas’ starting point guard, was suspended for the game by Pelphrey for an undisclosed disciplinary reason.

“Not that they don’t have good guard play already,” Adkins said.

“But Fortson is supposed to be a special point guard, and you get him out there and their future definitely looks great.”
