White leads women to third SEC title Published: Tuesday, November 04, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL STARKVILLE, Miss. — Sophomore Catherine White won the individual title and helped Arkansas win its third consecutive SEC Cross Country Championship on Monday at Mississippi State. White finished the 6 K race in 20 minutes, 7. 26 seconds, pulling away from Hollie Knight of Auburn and Sarah Bowman of Tennessee. White led a pack of Razorbacks, three of whom finished in the top 10 and two more finished 16 th and 17 th. Those high finishes helped No. 13 Arkansas win the team title with 46 points, just ahead of No. 14 Florida, which finished with 53. Tennessee was third with 107 points. “I’m so thankful I could come out here and run my best,” said White, the school’s 11 th individual champion in 18 years. “I started rolling with about 4 K to go, didn’t look back and took advantage of it.”
The team victory is Arkansas’ 13 th in 18 years in the SEC. White is the Razorbacks’ first individual winner since freshman Brooke Upshaw won in 2006. “It’s always great to watch a close race, and this one was,” Arkansas Coach Lance Harter said. “Florida had a great team this year, but we answered the call. It was by no means a perfect race for us, except maybe for Catherine. She was absolutely brilliant.” Seniors Denise Bargiachi and Christine Kalmer earned their fourth All-SEC honors with fourth- and eighth-place finishes. Sophomore Jillian Rosen finished 16 th, and senior Dacia Perkins was 17 th. Freshman Samantha Learch finished 28 th for the Razorbacks, out of the scoring picture but high enough to make the All-SEC Freshman team. INDIVIDUAL 1. Catherine White, Arkansas, 20: 07. 26; 2.
