THE RECRUITING GUY : Oklahoma State offers Hamilton; Arkansas favored Published: Tuesday, November 11, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL Oklahoma State recently joined 10 schools, including Arkansas, in offering a scholarship to Texarkana, Texas, receiver Cobi Hamilton. In addition to the Cowboys and Hogs, Hamilton has offers from Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, TCU, Houston and others. “Arkansas is still my No. 1,” said Hamilton, who reports a 36-inch vertical jump. Hamilton, 6-3, 200 pounds, 4. 52 seconds in the 40-yard dash, plans to take an unofficial visit to Oklahoma State when the Cowboys play Oklahoma on Nov. 29, then take his official visit there in December.
Hamilton has scheduled an official visit to Kansas on Dec. 5 and is in the process of setting up visits to Missouri and Arkansas. He said he talked to Razorbacks assistant coach Bobby Allen a little over a week ago. “He told me I’m the guy they want and they’re going to hold on for me,” said Hamilton, who finished fourth in the 200 meters at the AAU National Junior Olympics this summer with a time of 21. 41 seconds. “He told me to take my time and take a look at other schools. He wants me to come to Arkansas last.” Hamilton needs 22 receptions and 323 yards to become the Tigers’ all-time leading receiver. He has 44 catches for 819 yards and 12 touchdowns for the year. Hamilton has been to Arkansas’ games against Alabama and Florida on unofficial visits. He noted several reasons for naming the Hogs his favorite. “My parents went there and the fact they want me to go there,” he said. “The fan support in Texarkana and Fayetteville are unbelievable.” Hamilton also likes that the Razorbacks’ roster includes former Texarkana running back Dennis Johnson and former Texarkana, Texas, quarterback Ryan Mallett. “I wouldn’t mind catching balls from Mallett again,” Hamilton said. “It would be like high school again.” FINE FLORIDA PAIR It appears defensive end Alex Williams, 6-5, 210, 4. 5, of Florida A&M Developmental Research School, might have his best friend traveling with him on his official visit to Arkansas. That friend is his teammate and highly recruited linebacker Willie Farrell. Farrell, 6-2, 228, 4. 64, orally committed to LSU in April but plans to take visits to other schools. He estimates that he has about 35 scholarship offers, including from Arkansas, Michigan, LSU, Ole Miss, Florida State and others. “We did say when I took my visits he was going to try and go the same weekend,” Williams said. “We said we are going to take all of our visits together. If I come up there and he’s free that weekend, you’ll probably see him.” Both said offensive coordinator Paul Petrino talked to them about two weeks ago. “I have some interest. They’re a team on the rise,” said Farrell, who reports a 385-pound bench press. “They’re having a down year, but they’ve been on my mind.” Farrell said he doesn’t have any visits scheduled but will most likely take an official visit to LSU with Arkansas, South Carolina, Michigan, Maryland, Ole Miss, UCLA, Georgia, Alabama and others vying for the other four spots. Williams, who has scholarship offers from Arkansas, Ole Miss, Iowa, South Florida, East Carolina and Arkansas State, plans visits to Arkansas, Ole Miss and Tennessee. “My coaches told me to wait until after the season, and not to set any dates until I know what I’m doing and that my focus would be on the season,” said Williams, who needs two sacks to break the school record of 19 he set in his first year of varsity action last season. “I’m following their wishes. I’m trying to see what dates my mom would be able to be off.” Williams said his success has led to him being double- or triple-teamed. “I think last week, the other team ran on my side maybe six times the whole game,” Williams said. “A team that’s smart isn’t going to let you kill them when they know you’re capable. That would be stupid.” Farrell said he has an offer from Florida State, but he isn’t necessarily focused on staying in Florida. “The earth is pretty much the same everywhere — green grass, trees and whatever,” said Farrell, who plans to major in international business and finance. Beyond that, Farrell said he hopes to get a doctorate in international marketing. He eventually wants to own an importexport business. “I know if I work hard enough, I can be successful on and off the field,” Farrell said. “I’m looking at my life outside of football.” E-mail Richard Davenport at rdavenport@arkansasonline. com More Stories From: RICHARD DAVENPORT · THE RECRUITING GUY : 3 UA recruits on display at all-star event · THE RECRUITING GUY : Moss\' Arkansas roots include tree-climbing uncle · THE RECRUITING GUY : Arkansas coaches staying busy during dead period · THE RECRUITING GUY : Wingos enjoy visit from Horton · THE RECRUITING GUY : UA offers Mississippi kicker scholarship Yesterday's Most Popular 1.
