RECRUITING : A quick look at some of the Razorbacks’ top targets Published: Sunday, November 16, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino and his staff spent the weekend recruiting thanks to a bye week. The Razorbacks have 21 commitments and could still take commitments from another six to eight recruits. Arkansas has two scholarships to count back to the class of 2008, and the NCAA allows a school to bring in 25 recruits each year. Some athletes who sign with schools don’t academically qualify, so it’s not unusual for a school to oversign by one or two athletes. Here is a look at nine recruits who have offers from the UA and could be among the ones filling those final spots: RONNIE WINGO (RB, 6-3, 212 pounds, 4. 4 seconds in the 40-yard dash, Saint Louis University ) Wingo is rated a four-star recruit by Rivals. com and will visit Missouri and Illinois before playing in the U. S. Army All-American Game on Jan. 3 in San Antonio. The following weekend, Wingo is scheduled to visit Arkansas. Wingo has many options for his other two visits, including Alabama.
COBI HAMILTON (WR, 6-3, 190, 4. 56, Texarkana (Texas ) High ) A three-star recruit who has enjoyed a banner senior season. Nebraska and Oklahoma State are the latest schools to offer. Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Kansas State were among the first to offer. Very good size and very good speed with sure hands. Both parents attended the UA. JESSE GRANDY (ATH, 5-11, 172, 4. 44, Pine Bluff Dollarway ) Very good athlete who was offered shortly after his performance at the FCA Combine in Little Rock. It’s beginning to look as if he may head out of state to play since he hasn’t appeared to be as receptive to Arkansas ’ offer as most of the others in the state. Could still choose the Razorbacks, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if he opts to leave. Can play wide receiver or in the secondary. A three-star recruit. LANCE RAY (WR, 6-2, 183, 4. 44, Havana (Fla. ) East Gadsden ) One of Paul Petrino’s top targets in Florida from early in the recruiting process. Listed as an athlete by recruiting services, Arkansas wants him as a wide receiver and will get a visit in early December. Illinois, Ole Miss and others are trying to convince Ray to sign with them, but Petrino may be hard to beat on this one. A threestar recruit. COREY GAINES (DL, 6-0, 274, 4. 91, Tallahassee (Fla. ) Godby ) Another recruit being eyed by Paul Petrino. A four-star recruit who can dominate a game from his position on the defensive line. Very good agility for a player his size. Hard to determine his favorites since he has been placed off-limits to media to concentrate on his senior season. Plans a visit to Arkansas at some point. JASON PIERRE-PAUL (DE, 6-5, 280, 4. 9, Fort Scott (Kan. ) Community College ) A four-star recruit who is among the elite junior college recruits. Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Georgia and everyone else is chasing this former Sunshine State lineman. Has played football for only three years, so his best football is ahead of him. Is athletic enough to do backflips in pads. Close to a must-get recruit for the Razorbacks. RUDELL CRIM (DB, 6-0, 190, 4. 45, Butler County (Kan. ) Community College ) This four-star recruit can play safety or cornerback. Has strong ties to UA’s Michael Smith, so that could work in Arkansas’ favor. Is drawing recruiting attention nationally from Oregon, Arkansas and various others. EMMANUAL LARTEY (CB, 5-11, 171, 4. 5, College Park (Ga. ) Banneker ) Lorenzo Ward offered him early in the recruiting process. Arkansas has secured commitments from two standouts at cornerback, including Helena-West Helena Central’s Darius Winston, 6-1, 180, 4. 34, but if Arkansas opts to take a third then Lartey could be the one. A three-star recruit. DEREK JOHNSON (DL, 6-3, 290, 5. 0, Hoxie ) Made an oral commitment to Texas early in the recruiting process and there is no reason to think he won’t stick with the Longhorns. That hasn’t prevented Arkansas from still hoping to land him. The four-star standout can play end or tackle.
