SEC : No. 4 Gators thrash Gamecocks Published: Sunday, November 16, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Ol ’ Ball Coach never experienced anything like this at Florida Field. Not as a player. Not as a coach. Not even as an opponent. Percy Harvin ran for a careerhigh 167 yards and two touchdowns, Tim Tebow accounted for three scores and No. 4 Florida thrashed 25 th-ranked South Carolina 56-6 Saturday, handing Steve Spurrier his worst loss in 90 games at The Swamp. The Gators won their sixth in a row, finished unbeaten in the SEC Eastern Division and kept their national title hopes alive by beating the Gamecocks for the 16 th time in the past 17 years. The 50-point drubbing was South Carolina’s worst loss since falling 63-7 to Spurrier’s Gators in 1995.
Not even a few visor tosses would have helped Spurrier in this one. Florida (9-1, 7-1 ) scored three touchdowns in eight plays in the first quarter, capitalizing on three consecutive turnovers by South Carolina (7-4, 4-4 ), and put the game away when Harvin went 80 yards for a score on the opening play of the third. Brandon Spikes started Florida’s scoring barrage when he intercepted Chris Smelley’s pass — the quarterback was under heavy pressure from linebacker Brandon Hicks — and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown. Two plays later, Hicks tipped Smelley’s pass in the flat. Ahmad Black intercepted that one, and Harvin darted up the middle for a 26-yard score on the next snap. Smelley finished 13 of 24 for 92 yards. He alternated plays with Stephen Garcia, but neither one was effective. Garcia was 6 of 13 for 28 yards with an interception. The Gamecocks tried a little trickery on the ensuing kickoff, but Dion LeCorn’s lateral across the field went over Chris Hail’s outstretched arms. Florida’s James Smith scooped it up at the 3 and nearly scored. Hail tackled him just shy of the goal line. Tebow took it from there, scoring his 11 th rushing touchdown of the season and putting the Gators ahead 21-0. Tebow made it 28-0 when he hooked up with Deonte Thompson for a 46-yard score down the sideline. The Heisman Trophy winner finished 13 of 20 passing for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran 14 times for 39 yards. He added a 5-yard TD pass to Aaron Hernandez on the first play of the fourth, then turned things over to backup John Brantley the rest of the way. Tebow didn’t trounce South Carolina’s defense like he did a year ago, when he had 120 yards rushing and a school-record five touchdowns to go along with 304 yards passing and two more scores in the 51-31 victory. He didn’t have to, either. Harvin did that. The speedster didn’t play in Columbia last year because of migraine headaches, but handed the Gamecocks two games worth of frustration Saturday. He ran just eight times, but averaged 20. 9 yards a carry and surpassed his previous career high (165 yards ) set against Michigan in the Capital One Bowl in January. It was somewhat surprising since Spurrier brought the nation’s third-ranked defense to Gainesville. South Carolina led the SEC in total defense, allowing just 256. 5 yards a game, and ranked third in scoring defense (15. 6 points a game ) and second against the run (101. 4 yards a game ). The Gamecocks had surrendered 12 rushing touchdowns all season; Florida scored five times on the ground. They hadn’t given up more than 24 points in any game, and all three of their losses were by seven points. Spurrier’s record at Florida Field had been even more impressive. He was 13-2 as a player with the Gators (1964-66 ), 68-5 as Florida’s coach (1990-2001 ) and 0-1 with the Gamecocks (2006 ). His only loss by 10 or more in Gainesville came in 1993, when rival and eventual national champion Florida State beat his Gators 33-21. The Gators have outscored opponents 299-63 in their six-game winning streak and have been even more dominant in the first quarter. They have outscored Arkansas, LSU, Kentucky, Georgia, Vanderbilt and South Carolina by a combined 101-0 in the opening 15 minutes. GEORGIA 17, AUBURN 13 AUBURN, Ala. — Knowshon Moreno rushed for 134 yards and caught a pass for a touchdown as No. 10 Georgia held off upset-minded Auburn. The Bulldogs (9-2, 6-2 ) went ahead for good with 8: 24 to play on a 17-yard pass from Matthew Stafford to A. J. Green and then stopped two late Auburn drives to seal the victory. The final chance for Auburn (5-6, 2-5 ) came on a fourth-and-1 play from the Georgia 14 when quarterback Kodi Burns (Fort Smith Northside ) overthrew Ben Tate in the end zone with a second remaining. Stafford completed 15 of 24 passes for 215 yards and 2 touchdowns. Stafford drove Georgia 60 yards in six plays for the winning touchdown. Auburn had taken the lead with 11: 05 left after grinding out an 11-play, 90-yard drive. Auburn went for it on fourth-and-1 at its 20, and Burns converted with a 1-yard sneak. Auburn’s touchdown came on a winding 35-yard run by Mario Fannin. The drive took up almost six minutes of the third and fourth quarters. It started after Georgia had extended its lead to 10-6 at 1: 48 in the third quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Blair Walsh. Making his first career start at tailback, Fannin ran for 59 yards and caught four passes for 48 yards and another TD. After Georgia’s go-ahead score, Auburn drove 49 yards to the Bulldogs’ 21 before a fourth-down pass from Burns to Montez Billings fell incomplete with 4: 17 to play. Auburn’s final drive started at its 20 with 1: 44 left and was kept alive by third-down runs of 14 and 17 yards by Burns. MISSISSIPPI 59, LOUISIANA-MONROE 0 OXFORD, Miss. — Jevan Snead threw three touchdowns and added two rushing scores as Mississippi became bowl eligible for the first time since 2003. The Rebels (6-4 ) built a 38-0 halftime lead after scoring on six of seven possessions. The first half offensive outburst was the most productive since a 40-0 halftime lead against Memphis in 1980. Snead was 6 of 12 for 170 yards and rushed 3 times for 11 yards to account for 5 touchdowns. Cordera Eason added 107 yards in 14 carries as the Rebels finished with 520 yards, 341 in the first half, in total offense. Louisiana-Monroe (3-8 ) managed to cross midfield only twice and was limited to 131 yards in total offense Ole Miss covered 72, 54, 37, 31 and 94 yards on the first half touchdown series. Snead had scoring passes of 22 and 23 yards to Gerald Harris and Michael Wallace, between touchdown runs of 17 and 22 yards by Eason and Dexter McCluster. Snead capped the first half with a 1-yard scoring run before connecting on a 3-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Davis and a 9-yard scoring run for a 52-0 lead with 5: 54 left in the third period. Davis added a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth period. VANDERBILT 31, KENTUCKY 24 LEXINGTON, Ky. — D. J. Moore scored touchdowns on his first two career receptions and added two critical interceptions, and Vanderbilt beat Kentucky to gain bowl eligibility for the first time in 26 years. Twice in the past three seasons, the Commodores (6-4, 4-3 ) could have ended their postseason drought by simply beating a Kentucky team that had long joined them at the bottom of the SEC standings. They failed on both attempts. The Wildcats (6-5, 2-5 ) therefore were perhaps an appropriate victim for the Commodores’ fourth SEC victory — a total they last reached in their Hall of Fame Bowl season of 1982, their previous postseason appearance. Another victory against in-state rival Tennessee on Saturday would match Vanderbilt’s record for SEC victories, set in 1935 when the conference was in its infancy. Chris Nickson, starting in place of Mackenzi Adams, who sustained a hip pointer a week earlier against Florida, completed 15 of 27 passes for a season-high 155 yards and 3 touchdowns.
