Hogs’ signees pass eye test, coach says Published: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas Coach John Pelphrey said the Razorbacks addressed their needs with three signees during the NCAA’s early period. The signees are 7-0 center Anthony Borden from West Memphis; 6-7 forward Marshawn Powell from Crozet, Va.; and 6-5 guard Jemal Farmer from Cloud (Kan. ) Community College. All three signed last week, but Pelphrey hadn’t commented on the recruiting class until Tuesday because administrative paperwork needed to be completed. “Those three guys all fit a need for us,” Pelphrey said. “They’ll all have a chance to have an impact next year. Physically, those guys look like SEC players.”
Borden, who weighs 230 pounds, averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds as a junior. “Certainly he needs to get physically stronger, but it’s not like he’s 182 pounds,” Pelphrey said. “He’s well-proportioned already. “ He can run, he can catch the ball.... You may be talking about a different guy in the next two or three months than he is right now. That’s how hard he’s going to work.” Powell is playing at The Miller School in Charlottesville, Va., where he averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocked shots last season. “He gives us a guy at the power forward spot that’s versatile from the perimeter,” Pelphrey said. “He can handle it, pass it, shoot it, but obviously is good around the basket as well.” Farmer, from Chicago, averaged 16. 1 points and 5. 4 rebounds as a freshman at Cloud last season, earning first-team All-Jayhawk Conference honors. This season he’s averaging 21 points and 4. 7 rebounds. Pelphrey said Farmer is a big, athletic wing player the Razorbacks needed with the loss of Patrick Beverley. It’s possible Arkansas will add more signees in the spring. Yesterday's Most Popular 1. THE RECRUITING GUY : 3 UA recruits on display at all-star event 2. ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS VS.
