SEC MEN : Cold-shooting Gators win

Published: Friday, November 21, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Nick Calathes had 18 points and seven rebounds, leading No. 18 Florida to a 64-50 victory over Southern Utah on Thursday night despite one of the worst three-point shooting performances in team history.

Calathes was the only Florida player with at least 10 points. The Gators (3-0 ) went 1 for 16 on three-pointers and barely extended their school-record streak of consecutive games with at least one three-pointer to 546.

Dan Werner made the only three-pointer for Florida, and it came with 22. 1 seconds to play from the top of the key.

The last time the Gators failed to make a three-pointer was Jan. 11, 1992, against Kentucky. Florida made 14 of 32 from long range in its last game, an 81-58 victory over Bradley on Sunday.

Werner went 1 for 6 from three-point range. Calathes was 0 for 5, Erving Walker 0 for 3 and Walter Hodge 0 for 2.

Florida shot 0 for 8 on threepointers in the first half but still led 33-25 at the break. Calathes had nine points in the half and Alex Tyus contributed six points and five rebounds.

The Gators started slowly but went on a 10-0 run to take a 15-6 lead with 11: 19 remaining and had another 10-0 run to extend the cushion to 33-17 with 3: 52 to play.

Davis Baker led Southern Utah (1-1 ) with 23 points and eight rebounds. He scored 21 in the second half. LSU 77, ALCORN STATE 45

BATON ROUGE — Tasmin Mitchell, Storm Warren and Alex Farrer led a balanced scoring attack as LSU defeated Alcorn State in a first-round game of the LSU Invitational on Thursday night.

Mitchell, who played just 18 minutes, finished with 12 points and six rebounds for the Tigers (2-0 ). Mitchell made 4 of 6 field-goal attempts, and all four of his free throws.

Warren had 11 points and 11 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and 2 assists. Farrer also finished with 11 points.

Troy Jackson led the Braves (0-3 ) with 16 points. All but two of Jackson’s points came in the first half. Jarvis Williams, who averaged 15 points in Alcorn’s first two games, was held to a single basket. ILLINOIS 69, VANDERBILT 63

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Demetri McCamey scored 23 points as Illinois defeated Vanderbilt.

McCamey’s layup broke a tie with 6: 22 remaining and started a 7-0 run that put the Illini (3-0 ) in front to stay.

Vanderbilt (1-1 ) tied the game at 58-58 on a free throw by A. J. Ogilvy with 6: 56 remaining, but then was held scoreless until Andre Walker made a layup and a foul shot with 2: 13 to play.

The Commodores made just 13 of 21 free throws (61. 9 percent ) in the game. Jermaine Beal made two free throws with 1: 38 left that got the Commodores within two points. Beal then missed a game-tying layup with 22 seconds to go.

Illinois was 11 for 11 from the line, including two each by Trent Meacham and Chester Frazier in the final 20 seconds.

McCamey made 9 of 15 field goals, including 5 of 9 from behind the arc, and led all scorers. His three-point shot as the first half expired gave the Illini a 36-35 lead at the half. It was the fourth lead change of the half.

Meacham (14 points ), Mike Davis (11 points ) and Mike Tisdale (10 points ) all scored at least 10 for Illinois. Davis added a gamehigh 12 rebounds before he fouled out on Walker’s basket.

SWAC CREIGHTON 82, ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 50 OMAHA, Neb. — Cavel Witter led four Creighton players with at least 10 points, scoring 15 in the Bluejays’ victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
