THE RECRUITING GUY : UA looking hard at Memphis White Station’s Hall Published: Tuesday, November 25, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL With the early signing period over, Arkansas Coach John Pelphrey and staff are looking toward the spring signing period April 15-May 20 and could sign one or two more prospects. Forward Ferrakohn Hall, 6-8, 215 pounds, of Memphis White Station, is one the Hogs have their eye on. He has scholarship offers from Arkansas, Memphis and Alabama-Birmingham. “I have a lot of interest in Arkansas,” said Hall, who’s rated by ESPN as the No. 20 small forward in the nation and being recruited by Razorbacks assistant Tom Ostrom. “He called me and asked about my game the other night and making sure I was still interested. He wants to get me up there at some point.” Pelphrey has talked to Hall about possible plans for him.
“Coach Pelphrey told me he wanted me to be the guy to bring it up or I could be trailing and they could get it back to me for the three.” Hall said. Because of a transfer rule that forces athletes to sit out a full year when transferring from a private school to a public, Hall was able to play only in the last four games last season but helped White Station to the state championship game after transferring from Memphis University High School. “I can go inside and out,” Hall said. “I like to work inside first. In the past, I’ve been known to be lingering around the outside more, and when I noticed I was doing that, I started going to the post more. I feel like I have an all-around game.” Hall is uncertain if he wants to stay at home for college. “That’s a tough question because Memphis is also recruiting me,” Hall said. “I really don’t know. I like it here in Memphis, it’s my hometown, but it’s good and bad to be in it.” Van Coleman, of CBS College Sports, rates Hall the No. 67 prospect in the nation for the 2009 class. “Ferrakohn is an excellent athlete,” said Coleman, who has covered national recruiting for more than 30 years. “He attacks the glass well. He can score with the jumper or finish at the rim. He’s a good solid defender who has a big upside with his athletic ability.” Hall, who averaged about 15 points a game as a sophomore, hopes to attend a game at Arkansas while on his official visit. “I’m pretty sure it will be during the season,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about making my decision around January.” Hall said he plans to major in sports management in college and use the degree to stay involved in basketball. HOGS COURTING KICKER A possible answer to Arkansas’ kicking woes could have an international connection. West Memphis kicker Paulo Henriques, 5-10, 200, played soccer in his native South Africa before moving to the United States in May 2004 and taking up football. He’s receiving strong interest from Arkansas, Ole Miss, Memphis, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Holy Cross, Harding and Arkansas Tech. Henriques said he talks to Arkansas recruiting coordinator Tim Horton every week. “It’s hard for them to find a scholarship for me, but Coach Horton told me he’s trying his best,” said Henriques, who said he’s kicked a 65-yard field goal in practice. “If anything, I would love to go to the U of A even if I had to start off kicking off. That would be amazing. He always tells me no matter what, I want you to be a Razorback even if it means walking on.” Henriques made 11 of 16 fieldgoal attempts and 36 of 40 extra-point attempts as a junior. Two of his field goals included a school-record 53-yarder and a 51-yarder. Approximately 90 percent of his kickoffs this season have been touchbacks. Arkansas appears to be the front-runner for Henriques ’ services, but a scholarship offer from another school could change that. “I would like to go somewhere I can get a full scholarship,” he said. “But if it comes down to no one offering me, the University of Arkansas is going to be the first place I’m going to walk on.” ADDRESSING DYER RUMOR Unfortunately in recruiting, many baseless rumors are started and gain momentum. That’s the case with high profile junior running back Michael Dyer, of Little Rock Christian, who has scholarship offers from Arkansas, Alabama, Ole Miss, Stanford, and Tulsa and will no doubt receive numerous others. Some have speculated that Dyer is close to orally committing to Arkansas. However, Dyer’s uncle, Andre Dyer, said that is false. While Andre Dyer doesn’t dismiss the possibility of his nephew becoming a Razorback, he said his nephew is keeping his options open and plans to take visits to other schools.
