LIKE IT IS : It’s time to decide who really wants to be a Hog Published: Wednesday, November 26, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL Since last Saturday’s loss to Mississippi State, there has been a lot of talk about how some of the Arkansas Razorbacks did not buy into Bobby Petrino’s system. Which is true, but there were not that many and it needs to be pointed out there are still plenty of kids who are proud to wear the Razorbacks uniform. That running through the ‘A’ to start a game means something to most. In fact, one name that pops to mind immediately is Lucas Miller, who walked on in 2005 because he loved the Hogs.
His early stats weren’t much — one catch as a redshirt freshman and 12 as a sophomore — but that was in a run-oriented offense. Going into last Saturday’s game at Mississippi State, he had 17 catches for the season, but Saturday afternoon he fought hard and had 10 catches (eight were for first downs ) for 201 yards. He should have been an inspiration to everyone on the team, especially the defensive players, most of whom seemed to have no spark against a poor offensive team. If Petrino evaluates the returning players and feels some are not buying into his system, then he needs to take their scholarships, but only after he finds them a place to transfer where they can play football. Players all over the country option out of their one-year contract and transfer. If a coach needs to transfer some guys when he first arrives, that’s only fair. Regardless, there are still a ton of talented young men who would gladly spill their blood, sweat and tears for the Razorbacks. If you grow up a real Razorbacks fan in Arkansas, there are two schools you could almost never pull for. Ole Miss (dating to at least 1960 ) and Texas (dating to 1894 ). As painful as this might be to admit, the Longhorns are about to get cheated out of the BCS Championship Game. Texas beat Oklahoma by 10 points, 45-35, on a neutral field Oct. 11. The Longhorns then lost to Texas Tech in Lubbock on a fluke last-minute play. The Sooners beat the dog out of Texas Tech last Saturday in Norman, Okla. Those last two victories were at home, and where did Texas beat OU ? In Dallas. The BCS rankings that came out this week had Texas No. 2, but that was thanks to the computers, because the polls voted on by humans had a brain freeze and forgot that the Longhorns beat the Sooners by 10 and ranked OU ahead of Texas. The computers barely gave Texas the No. 2 spot behind Alabama, just. 084 points ahead of No. 3 OU. The computers, unlike the voters, do not use margin of victory as a factor. But they do use strength of schedule, and despite OU losing to Texas by 10 on a neutral field, the Sooners play Oklahoma State this week, ranked No. 12 by the BCS, while the Longhorns face unranked Texas A&M. That means the computers will most likely move Oklahoma ahead of Texas in the next BCS rankings, which would send the Sooners to Kansas City to play Missouri in the Big 12 Championship Game. If Oklahoma wins — not a given — it would advance to the BCS Championship Game to face the winner of the Florida-Alabama SEC Championship Game. Texas, which beat OU by 10 on a neutral field, would probably go to the Fiesta Bowl. Unless the Tigers upset OU, and then the already convoluted BCS would get even more confusing. If somehow Texas makes it to the Big 12 championship, which it rightfully should, the cheer in Arkansas that day will most likely be — “MIZZOU-RAH.” Especially around the Democrat-Gazette, where a large part of the sports staff are Missouri alumni.
